Thursday, 18 July 2019: Bizcommunity’s 67 minutes for Mandela Day CSI outreach at Manenberg Primary School

A bit of rain didn't stop the team's 67 Minutes for Mandela Day activities. We delivered sweet treats and bookmarks to all the kiddies of Manenberg Primary School, and read to 70 learners from the grade 1 and 2 classes. Also see the pretty birdie painted on one of the exterior classroom walls, and our quick team pizza lunch at Ashley's Family Restaurant post-event.

*Disclaimer: Our meal at Balducci was part of our review package. All else came from our own pockets. All enjoyed equally.

The Fat Greek, Cape Town’s spring flowers and Hout Bay roadtripping

Last weekend was chilly but bright, so we took advantage of the sunshine to take in some of the sights we forget when we stay closer to home in the wet winter months…

Friday, 7 September 2018: Spring Day braai at work

Spring braai at work.
Scenes from our Spring braai at work last Friday, after our monthly staff meeting. We were just finishing off when the rain came, good timing!

Saturday, 8 September 2018: Trecastelli breakfast, Fat Greek lunch

Breakfast at Trecastelli
Last weekend’s mantra was all about trying new places to eat. We started first thing on Saturday with breakfast at Trecastelli in Marine Circle. See my cappuccino and ‘Nutella cornetto’ – R40 for both, as well as Husband’s cooked breakfast of two eggs, cheese, tomatoes, bacon and avo. Yum.
Kites near Melkbos
Pretty kites near Melkbos that afternoon.
Lunch at the Far Greek
Sticking with our ‘try something new’ mandate, we decided on lunch at the Fat Greek, on Marine Circle. See my very pink shake and chicken gyro with chips, as well as Husband’s lamb kleftiko and glass of red. Lovely!
Blouberg
These post-lunch pics give an idea of the weather here – sunny but chilly. Various spots in and around Blouberg.

Sunday, 9 September 2018: Hout Bay roadtripping

Takeaway coffee from Reload.
With a road trip you never know when exactly you’ll stop for breakfast, so it’s a good idea to get a coffee for the road. Our cappuccinos were from Reload. Love the cute sugar bowls.
Breakfast at Yours Truly's Today and Tomorrow
It was Yours Truly’s ‘Today and Tomorrow’ on Kloof Street where we finally stopped for breakfast. Husband went for the eggs benedict, and my banana bread breakfast with a chai latte was just right.
Atlantic coastline
You can’t help but take beautiful mountain-ocean landscape shots when travelling along the Atlantic coastline.
Mariner's Wharf, Hout Bay
Ah, Hout Bay. We stopped for another stroll and a spot of lunch once we reached Mariner’s Wharf.

The train, complete with passengers, was stopped near Fish Hoek beach throughout our 10-minute or so walk above the beach.
Insomniac shake at Saint's
We went back to one of our favourites, Saint’s in Eden on the Bay, for our final treat of the weekend. See my Insomniac alcoholic shake – chocolate with espresso, Amarula and Frangelico.
Blueberry mojito at Saint's.
Proof that Husband was there, too – see his mint- and lime-heavy blueberry mojito.
Table Mountain Spring flowers
We also stopped to smell the flowers, or rather sit amongst them, that afternoon. That’s how you know Spring is in the Cape!
Dog
Sweet Bassie was very interested in all the foodies when we had lupper at Mum’s that evening.
Trecastelli pastries
Some of the delicious Trecastelli Italian delicacies we ate at Mum’s that afternoon – not from our visit, they went for their own breakfast on Sunday, following our recommendation.

Monday, 10 September 2018:Β  Day off reading, relaxing and pizza lunching

Dogs on couch
I had put in for a day’s leave, so spent much of the morning relaxing with the doglets. See my book, coffee and even Pop-tarts for brekkie.

The highlight of the day was milkshakes and half-price pizzas for lunch with my parents at Col’Cacchio in Seaside Village.

Thursday, 13 September 2018: Spark Media breakfast event

Breakfast at Fire & Ice
I started my Thursday at the Spark Media breakfast presentation, held at the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice. So much to choose from to eat – so much brain food, too – coverage coming to Bizcommunity, soon!
Dairy Milk Bubbly Oreo
My sweet deskmate treated me to this new Bubbly Oreo chocolate slab on Thursday. Yum!

That’s all, folks! Have a happy, healthy weekend filled with delicious moments. πŸ™‚

Spring 2018: Seaside milkshakes, beers and braais

Last weekend was chilly yet sunny – some would say Spring is here, but the weather at the moment is anything but. Grey, misty and drizzly, with bursts of sunshine now and then, it feels like we’re back at the start of winter. Let’s look back at the sunshine instead…

Friday, 31 August 2018: Bizcommunity and Cinemark’s Cannes Lions feedback session

The Biz Cannes feedback session
Some of the scenes from the Cape Town version of the Bizcommunity and Cinemark feedback from Cannes Lions morning – see Proteas and French flags alike at the food table to depict a taste of France (Cannes) in SA; as well as some of my favourite moments from the presentations of the morning. Saturday, 1 September 2018: Spring Day braai at the in-laws

Palm tree in Melkbosstrand
Beautiful palm tree-lined street in Melkbosstrand, and just look at the cute little bench.
Damhuis in Melkbos breakfast
We got to Damhuis in Melkbosstrand just as they were opening on Saturday morning, so that’s where we breakfasted. See our cappuccinos with tiny rusks to dunk; as well as my scone topped with jam, whipped cream and grated cheese; and Husband’s banting bacon eggs benedict served on a mushroom.
Dog smelling flower
Bertie was in the Spring spirit later that morning, merrily sniffing flowers in the garden. Such a sweet boy.
Table Mountain
Beautiful crashing waves and view of Table Mountain at one of Husband’s favourite swimming spots that afternoon.
Doodles milkshake
Lol! Pictures on the right are there to see if you’re paying attention – it’s my caramel treat milkshake and husband’s beer, obviously. This is outside at Doodles on the beachfront in the early afternoon. Just lovely.
Braai
Later that day, we headed to my parents-in-law’s house for an evening braai.

Sunday, 2 September 2018: Brotherly breakfast at the Pink Olive

Coffee at the Pink Olive
Spec slept over at ours that night, so we breakfasted at the Pink Olive the next morning. Big smiles once our coffees were downed.
Breakfast at the Pink Olive
The Pink Olive should be called the Blue Olive with this decor, really. See our coffees, the boys’ ‘bacon banting basket’ breakfasts (yes, Husband’s second banting brekkie of the weekend) and my toasted chicken mayo with red onions and gherkins. Yum!

Wednesday, 6 September 2018: I always feel like somebody’s watching me

Dogs
This is how the doggies stare at me when I’m trying to work. That’s when they’re not jostling for spots on my lap, of course.

That’s all, folks. Keep warm and dry this weekend!

Farewell curries at Ninety One and CTICC conferencing

Can you believe we’re already in August! This past week has been busy on all fronts as usual, as you’ll see from the pics below…

Friday, 27 July 2018: Birthday cakes at work and Petiscos dins

Creative Mornings at Friends of Design on Bree Street
Almost as soon as I’d sat down at my desk on Friday, it was time to leave for the monthly Creative Mornings Cape Town talk, held at Friends of Design on Bree Street. The talk was on the theme of ‘intention’ – watch for my coverage on Biz this coming Monday.
Office birthday cake.
When I got back to the office there was a selelction of cakes and sweet treats to celebrate my colleague Gail’s birthday. T’was lovely!
Chicken xai xai at Petiscos.
It had been a long, hard work week so we treated ourselves to dins at Petiscos last Friday night, as we had so enjoyed the chicken fillet xai xai the previous weekend. It was delicious and came fast! Husband had his with a glass of red again, I went for the wild berry shake.

Saturday, 28 July 2018: Small dogs and Sea Point curries

Breakfast at Mugg & Bean
We had weekend admin to tick off our lists at Table Bay Mall on Saturday, so we started off with a quick breakfast at Mugg & Bean. See Husband’s bacon-egg-tomato toast and my triple-choc muffin, That’s a flat white for me and a serious cappuccino for him.
Dog in garden
My sweet girl enjoying the sunshine outside on Saturday morning.
Small dog.
Sometimes Bertie sits in a way that makes him look tiny (he’s a hefty 10kg ‘medium’ according to doggie food charts). Bless.
Dogs on couch
The doglets on the couch together that afternoon. Little Miss Bassie looks concerned, Bertie not so much.
Curry at Ninety One in Sea Point
On Saturday evening we made the long trek past town, to combine a colleague of mine’s farewell dinner with my brother-in-law Spec’s birthday. We went to Ninety One in Sea Point and had the most delicious curries – the butter chicken with peshwari (desiccated coconut and raisin) naan bread as amazing!
Curry dinner at Ninety One.
The girls! Some have since left the team, but we’re always good for a curry dinner catch-up.

Sunday, 29 July 2018: Baconville breakfast, Moyo sunset dins

Chocolate latte at Baconville.

Choc-chip queen cakes
Choc-chip birthday queen cakes Mum whipped up for Spec, eaten at my in-laws’ house on Sunday afternoon.
Sleepy dog.
Bertie was a sleepy sweetheart that afternoon and slept on his dad’s lap, almost on top of his sister and spreadeagled on the sun-warmed carpet.
Moyo lamb-shank linguine
We decided on a shared bowl of the lamb-shank linguine at Moyo in Eden on the Bay for our early Sunday dins. Also see my hazelnut latte and lots of heaters and interesting pink lights.
Sunset at Eden on the Bay
We had the full Moyo experience with gas heaters and drumming music and my face-painted, and were lucky enough to catch the sun setting over the sea just as we were leaving.

Tuesday, 31 July 2018: Farewell cakes at work

Farewell cake at work.
Such beautiful cakes! These were in honour of Ilse’s formal farewell lunch at work on Tuesday.

Wednesday, 1 August 2018: CEM Africa conference day one

CTICC
Wednesday was the first day of the annual customer experience management or CEM Africa Summit. I’d not been to the CTICC for a while so enjoyed taking in the scenery before the conference sessions kicked off.
Food at CTICC conference
The food during tea breaks and lunch was as good as always at the CTICC, with fresh pastries and mini muffins, as well as sticky doughnuts, assorted desserts, and lots of small round foods easy to eat with the hands. I approve!

Thursday, 2 August 2018: CEM Africa conference day two

Food at CTICC
The food choices on day two did not disappoint!
CEM Africa at the CTICC.
Some of my favourite keynote presentations included these slides. You can read more about them here, here and here.

That’s all, folks! Here’s to a relaxing weekend all round. πŸ™‚

Brunch at Damhuis and mid-week Mexican Redemption burgers

Last week went by in a blur as I’ve been a bit under the weather and Husband was on night shift again. Luckily we’re both on leave for a bit next week, to recharge our batteries a little.

See a selection of my favourite moment since my last blog update below, I lived up to my promise of posting quite a few ‘family pics’ of Husband with his brother…

Friday, 19 May 2017: Fish Hoek funeral and evening fires

Aunty Sybil’s funeral flowers were beautiful – fitting as she was on the flower decorating committee at the church where her memorial service was held.
Muizenberg beach
Post-Home Affairs visit and funeral we stopped off at Muizenberg beach with Spec, who would be staying with us for the weekend. We weren’t really dressed for a dip in the sea but still soaked up some sunshine.
Dog at fireplace
T’was chilly that evening so Husband lit a fire. Bassie and I spent hours warming ourselves in front of it.

Saturday, 20 May 2017: Melkbos morning with mum-in-law

Coffee shake at Damhuis.
As Husband worked the previous weekend, we didn’t get to see my mum-in-law for Mother’s Day. We therefore had a belated Mother’s Day breakfast at Damhuis in Melkbos on Saturday. This was my coffee shake.
Breakfast at Damhuis in Melkbos
Family in breakfast/brunch mode. Was delicious!
Damhuis food and decor
Look at the lovely decor and some of the food on offer.
Walk in Melkbos
We went on a long walk along the coastline to work off some of that food. See the full Andrews family trotting barefoot here.
Hillside Quarry in Durbanville
Later that afternoon we took Spec to see the Hillside Quarry in Durbanville.
Hillside Quarry, Durbanville.
See? Proof we were there.
Skull table at Eden on the Bay.
We stopped in at Saint’s, Eden on the Bay for dins a little later.
Saint's burgers
This is what we ended up with – two draught beers top left, a single latte bottom right, my ‘Irish nacho’ potato skins and the boys’ fancy burgers.

Sunday, 21 May 2017: Peanut-butter hot chocolate at News Cafe

News Cafe Blouberg hot chocolate
Drinks at News Cafe were our Sunday afternoon highlight. See my peanut butter hot chocolate, Husband’s Long Island Ice Tea and another shot of the three of us together.

Milk tart.
For dessert, milk tart. 10/10!

Wednesday, 24 May 2017: Work lunch at Redemption Burgers

Old Biscuit Mill
Wednesday was the day of our next department lunch at work – we try have them every two months or so. This time we took a quick walk down the road to Redemption Burgers at the Old Biscuit Mill.
Mexican burger at Redemption burgers
The Mexican burger, topped with cheddar, guacamole and salsa. Also, tin mug of chips and my wavy-looking cappuccino mug.

That’s all, folks! Stay well and be sure to check in again next week!

Woodstock walking tour and behind the scenes at the Levi’s offices

What a week it has been. I had a mysterious tummy bug/migraine attack last weekend and am only now starting to feel myself again. Before we welcome in the weekend go through my latest batch of highlights below…

Wednesday, 11 May 2016: Levi’s factory tour

Dachshund fashion.
I wound up wearing all my dachshund fashion to the Levi’s press day. Click here for my full article, published today – the 143rd birthday of the Levi’s 501 button-fly…
Department of Coffee at Levi's
We started off with java drinks brewed by the Department of Coffee. Such a clever name and so good!
Levi's button table
Clever button-like tables so you don’t forget where you’re working.
Lion's Head from Levi's offices
Just look at that view! Lion’s Head is my favourite mountain, so this would be my spot of inspiration if I worked at Levi’s.
Walls at Levi's offices
Denim artwork lines the hallways…
Levi's artwork
Levi’s artwork on display. Impressive as they’ve only been in these offices a few weeks.
Levi's offices
So many interesting things in the Levi’s offices! Look at bits of mannequin. Look at fly-button shaped door handle in the background.

Friday, 13 May 2016: Bizcommunity’s walking tour of Woodstock

Walking Woodstock.
Walking Woodstock. To welcome new staff members our entertainment committee planned a walking tour followed by ‘burgers and beer’. It was just a few blocks from the office to Three Feathers Diner so we all trooped along together, chatting and snapping pics as we went. Thanks for the pic, Charlz!
Graffiti in Woodstock
Cheese! We all stopped in front of some colourful graffiti. Only a few remembered to don their sunnies so most of us are squinting but it’s still a fun shot! Thanks to our creative director Terry Levin for snapping us worker bees.
Walls at Three Feather's Diner in Woodstock
See the interesting artwork – “You’ll never walk alone” is fitting as we all walked together, teehee.
Coffee shake and chocolate shake.
Because of an order-timing issue, I ended up with a chocolate shake and a coffee shake – at the same time.
Mercury burger at Three Feather's Diner.
My meal at Three Feathers Diner. While that’s not exactly ‘crumbled feta’ as promised on the menu, the Mercury burger was delicious.
Ship light at Delos
We popped into Delos on our way back to the office after lunch and ‘oohed’ and ‘aahed’ over many lovely things, like the ship light in the background.

Saturday, 14 May 2016: Darts and braai time

Chai latte cake at Village Place.
What a cute bunny guarding the cakes at Village Place Cafe in West Coast Village! I ended up with a slice of the cake you see – vanilla chai latte. Was fresh and delicious. And yes, that was for breakfast.
Cappuccino at Village Place Cafe
The perfect cappuccino and shortbread heart on the side to wash it down.
French Village toasted
Husband had the French Village toasted, touted as the best sandwich. It sure was a pleasing mix of cheese, ham and mustard first thing in the morning.
Braai
Later we popped in at a friend’s house for a ‘quick braai’. This is the braai fire, with lots of wood at the ready to keep things burning.
Playing darts
Husband had a thrilling game of darts while waiting for the meat to cook.
I tried out the swinging tyre-seat chair.
I tried out the swinging tyre-seat chair.
Sitting in tyre-seat chair
So did Husband.

Sunday, 16 May 2016: Breakfast overlooking Blouberg beach

Table Mountain from Primi
Why not add some beautiful scenery to your Sunday morning breakfast by opting for Primi above Marine Circle in Blouberg?
Huevos Rancheros at Primi, Blouberg
Husband went for the Huevos Ranchos. I just had plain brown toast and a pot of Rooibos as was not feeling grand.

Thursday, 19 May 2016: Cape Town sunrise

Sunrise in Table View
As we were up with the sparrows to go to work by car because of a chance of rain, we caught the beautiful pinky clouds as the sun rose.
Sunrise in Dunoon
Just a few minutes later, everything had brightened and lightened. That’s Table Mountain way off in the distance.
Flowers at work.
The beautiful flowers displayed on the counter in our coffee shop downstairs always brighten my day.

That’s all, folks! A very happy weekend to all πŸ™‚

Bassie’s 9th birthday

Last Friday wasn’t just April Fool’s Day, it was also little Bassie’s 9th birthday. She’s quite the character. If you know her, she’s pushy, stubborn, loving and just the sweetest thing. Here are the past week’s highlights…

Friday, 1 April 2016: Tabasco Yoda Andrews’ 9th birthday

Mini dacschund
Look at that sweet face! Can’t believe this sweetheart is already 9, she brings so much joy to our lives.
Dacschund in birthday hat
Giving the birthday girl lots of love and attention once we were home from work.

Saturday, 2 April 2016: Wimpy brekkie and Burger Fair lupper

Wimpy toasted cheese
Wimpy’s one of the few places open early enough for our often growly-too-early-on-the-weekend tummies, so off to Wimpy we went on Saturday. This was my toasted cheese, with saucy chips and a mega coffee…
Wimpy streaky bacon with a cheese griller
Husband had his usual ‘streaky bacon breakfast with an extra cheese griller’, all washed down with a large Coke, of course.
Burger Fair in Bellville
After a handful of weekend chores we were dipping low on energy so decided to try our nearest road house – the Burger Fair in Bellville.
Milo shake at Burger Fair
When at a roadhouse of course the tray is attached to your car window and you eat in your seat. This was my Milo shake…
Cheese burger and chips at Burger Fair.
…And you turn your (floral) lap into a table . This was my cheeseburger and chips. Along with the Milo shake, Husband’s chili burger and another Coke, we got change from R100.
Table Mountain and trees.
Table Mountain looked pretty on the way home – it was too windy to keep the window open though so you’ll note the reflection. Sorry folks.

Sunday, 3 April: Brunch at McPherson’s, afternoon on Woodbridge Island

McPherson's menu
We popped into McPherson’s Restaurant first thing on Sunday. Here I am, perusing their new menu with my hair being its messy self… and you can’t miss my new tattoo.
Cappuccino at McPherson's
Mmm. Cappuccino with foam and chocolate sprinkles. Just right.
McPherson's club sandwich
You can’t go wrong with the club sandwich at McPherson’s. It’s packed with creamy chicken mayo and streaky bacon, with lovely potato wedges on the side.
Chef's omelette at McPherson's
Husband went for the chef’s omelette, which came with a side of toast and kept him full all day.
Strawberry shale at Beach Tavern
After some relaxing we headed off to Woodbridge Island. I had this delightful strawberry shake at the Beach Tavern. The sun was so bright we had to keep our sunnies on.
Castle draught at Beach Tavern.
Husband opted for a Castle draught. All this for less than R50. And you can’t miss HIS new tattoo!
Table Mountain from Woodbridge Island
Can’t go to Woodbridge Island without at least a tiny paddle in the sea… or at least getting close enough to see it.
Dacschund with turkey leg
Tabby was so excited about her ‘chewy turkey leg’ birthday present from Granny that evening, she didn’t know what to do with herself and was quite suspicious of everyone’s intentions.

Tuesday, 5 April 2016: Pretty flowers in Wembley Square

Fire-coloured flowers
Flowers of fire! I was in the area for a quick meeting and loved the fiery colours all round.

Thursday, 7 April 2016: Scotch eggs and sweet potato mash

Scotch eggs
Mum treated us to homemade scotch eggs and sweet potato mash on Thursday eve – let me know if you want her secret for avoiding a blue rim around the yolk πŸ˜‰

That’s all, folks! Looks like we’re in for a brief respite from the autumn chill this weekend – enjoy!
