Family Easter celebrations and first fireplace fire of 2017

Last weekend was a long one as t’was finally Easter weekend, plus Husband was on leave all of this week bar today, so we have a few more pics than usual below…

But first:

Happy sad dogs
Bassie hasn’t been feeling well the past few weeks. She’s finally on the right meds and feeling a bit better – but that’s her standard sad face on the right, with her brother grinning away on the left.

Also, behold:

Easter eggs
Easter time is the time for eggs, and the time for eggs is the Easter time! Teehee. Assorted Easter treats including a handful of second-hand books, an Easter-themed cake and toffee egg with coffee at work.

Friday, 14 April 2017: Good Friday brotherly beers

Early bird breakfast at News Cafe
It seemed Winter had hit when we woke on Good Friday so we dragged out some warm clothes and stopped at News Cafe in Marine Circle for their early bird breakfast. Always a win.
Beach walk
We took the doggies for very brief walkies at their favourite beach for a change of scenery. Bertie and his dad ran off into the waves while Bassie and I took it slow.
Saints shake
We finally got to spend some time with Husband’s brother Spec later that day, newly relocated to Cape Town. Note their matching haircuts (given at same barber shop). We had a liquid break at Saint’s in Eden on the Bay – that’s my banoffee shake while they perused the craft beer menu.
Table Mountain National Geographic frame at Eden on the Bay
Of course we took the ‘sitting on Table Mountain frame’ photo on our way back home.
Hot-cross buns
T’was quite chilly that evening. Here you can see me having a quick coffee at Husband’s parents’ house when we dropped off Spec, as well as my hot-cross-bun muffin and coffee at home, and little miss Bassie huddled in front of the fire Husband lit that evening.

Saturday, 15 April 2017: Pre-Easter braai

Breakfast at Cup & Cake
We breakfasted at Cup & Cake in Eden on the Bay on Saturday morning. That’s my slice of custard cake and cappuccino, and the avo-cream cheese-eggy toast Husband ended up with, pre- and post-Tabasco saucing.
Braai in Cape Town
I now present to you the first official braai at the Andrews seniors’ last Saturday.
Dogs in garden
Little Bassie and Bertie had fun trotting around their Granny’s garden, stopping for lots of attention and treats along the way.
Easter braai
It was quite the feast, once all the foodies were ready.
Braai pudding
Main meal eaten, it was time to try the ‘braai pudding’ – brownie topped with caramel and marshmallows that gets heated on the braai. Plus coffee, of course. Bassie was very interested.
Sunset in the suburbs
It was a lovely sunset once we got home that evening.

Sunday, 16 April 2017: Easter beach walk(s)

I Love Melkies breakfast
By Saturday morning the weather had cleared into summer sunshine again, so we ventured out to Melkbos for brekkie – I Love Melkies had just been renovated and looked most appealing, so that’s where we sat. See Husband with his cola and eggs on bacon-hash, with my cappuccino and bacon-marscapone-strawberry single waffle.
Beach jump at Melkbos
As you can see from my beach jump pics, this is what we did after we’d eaten.
Husband on the rocks
Do you see that little speck of a husband in the distance? He really loves the sea, that one.
Flamingoes at Woodbridge Island
That afternoon we did the Woodbridge Island-Lagoon Beach round trip walk. There were lots of flamingoes in the water.
Cocktails and chilli poppers at Woodbridge Island's Beach Tavern
Post-walkies we stopped in at The Beach Tavern in Woodbridge. We sampled a bacon-wrapped chilli popper and fancy milkshake each. I went for the strawberry cheesecake, Husband had the alcoholic apple version. Jeepers they tasted as ‘colourful’ as they looked!

Monday, 17 April 2017: Family day with our little family

Breakfast at Lacomias
The weather was still lovely so we ate outside at Lacomia’s on Monday morning. That’s my cappuccino, Husband’s salmon-cream cheese omelette and my toasted cheese and tomato.
Koi at GrandWest Casino
Monday was a lazy day with the doggies and finally going to watch Beauty and the Beast at the cinema. We always walk around the perimeter greeting the Koi before going into GrandWest Casino.
GrandWest Casino movies
We stopped at the ‘pose and press’ photo booth in The District before the movie, as you do. These are our happy faces.
Hussar Grill in GrandWest Casino
We were quite hungry after watching Beauty and the Beast so popped into the practically empty Hussar Grill. I’d been drooling over the thought of their chocolate-chilli chicken on mash for months, and Husband tried his first carpetbagger steak stuffed with oysters and topped with a brandy sauce. All in all, most delicious!
Sunset at GrandWest Casino.
T’was sunset when we left. What a wonderful long weekend.

Thursday, 20 April 2017: Male family golf morning

Golf at Burgundy Estate
The men-folk played golf at Burgundy Estate on Thursday morning (victors in order from left to right), the women-folk went for tea and I went to work. Sob.

That’s all, folks! Hope you had a happy Easter break and that you’re looking forward to the week ahead. πŸ™‚

Easter weekend 2016: Green dogs and beachy Adirondack chair DIY

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: Shorter work weeks are not easier work weeks. Not by a long shot as you tend to do the same amount of work as you would in a normal five-dayer. But I did have a lovely long break thanks to last week’s staycation, so am not quite as tired as I’d normally be.

Here’s what we got up to over the Easter long weekend…

Friday, 25 March 2016: Good Friday

Bayside Mugg & Bean flat white cappuccino
Good Friday began with breakfast at Mugg & Bean, Bayside. This was my ‘flat white cappuccino’, a weekend essential.
Apple Cinnamon flapjacks at Mugg & Bean
Instead of traditional hot cross buns, I had the ‘apple and cinnamon’ flapjacks for Good Friday breakfast.
Mushroom and avo eggs benedict
Husband had the ‘mushrooms and avo’ eggs benedict.
Table Mountain Blouberg
We stopped at the beach in Blouberg on our way back home as the weather was just amazing. Here is Husband heading towards the sea. He waded in deep enough to wet his shorts.
BLouberg beach
Isn’t that just a ridiculously beautiful beach day? Look at that glassy sea, the fluffy cloud reflection and the bluest sky, with seagulls on the rocks and my favourite mountain (Lion’s Head) in the background. We’re so lucky to live just five minutes down the road!
Star Wars books
Soon after, the weather turned quite miserable, with overcast skies and the threat of rain. And so we spent the morning indoors with the doggies. These are Husband’s latest Star Wars books, along with his space-themed bookmark.
Reading with dog.
I finished off Devil’s Peak by Deon Meyer – despite Bertie trying his best to distract me with licks.
Rocomama's smashburger menu in Durbanville
For a late lunch we decided on Rocomama’s in Durbanville, as we’d only heard good things about their ‘smashburgers’. They were so good I didn’t get a snap of them, so sorry, but here’s the fun order pad. You get to write your own name for your order, and can call yourself whatever you wish.
Milkshakes at Rocomama's Durbanville
We had these gourmet milkshakes. Husband’s pale one on the left was creme brulee, mine was Belgian chocolate. Both delicious.

Saturday, 26 March 2016: Earth Cafe breakfast and the DIY beach chair

Salmon croissant at Earth Cafe, Parklands
We started our Saturday with breakfast at Earth Cafe in Parklands, which recently reopened after a kitchen fire. Husband had this ‘au salmon’ croissant, I had banana cinnamon pancake with ice cream.
Wooden Adirondack
The doggies demonstrating the Adirondack chair and footstool ‘before paint job’. It was made for me by a lovely former colleague late last year and has been waiting for me to make up my mind on the colour scheme.
Paint from Builder's Warehouse
A quick trip to Builder’s Warehouse saw us purchasing all of this for less than R400 – the beach-coloured paints were on special.
Dogs on Adirondack
Post-paint, doggies in almost the same positions.
Peep home in door
Husband also put a peep hole in our front door.

26 March 2016: Easter Sunday

Sweetcorn fritters at Village Place Cafe.
Luckily our local Village Place Cafe was open for breakfast on Easter Sunday, as we were up early with hungry tummies. I had these sweetcorn fritters with bacon, salsa and poached egg, Husband went for the pesto breakfast.
Dog and sea foam
And then, pesto green beach time. Bassie had a bad experience with the sea foam on one of her first beach visits when we moved to Cape Town over three years ago so she usually steers clear, but you can see from her green front paw that she had a little dip at Kreeftebaai.
Green dog
Look. at. this. dog. Bertie is in his element at the beach, and decided he’d look better in green than white. All the green bits are usually as pristine as his muzzle. Of course he had a shower when we got home!
Dog swimming in sea foam
This is how he got himself quite so green. Had a wonderful time splashing about!
Chakalaka meatball pasta
Mmm. Chakalaka meatball pasta for Easter lupper at Mum’s.
Eating pasta
Easter lupper 2016 table shot. We’re funny πŸ™‚
Lindt Easter bunnies
Teehee. Of course we ‘bunny-eared’ each other while holding our Lindt Easter bunnies. But look a little closer…
Personalised Lindt bunnies
How cute, their little ribbons were personalised with our names!

Monday, 28 March 2016: Family Day

Unreal breakfast at Spur, Seaside Village
We’ve not been to Spur for their Unreal breakfast in months. We woke up later than usual on ‘Easter Monday’ and broke the fast at Spur in Seaside Village. Yes, Husband used all the sauces.
Unreal breakfast at Spur, Seaside Village
I donated my bacon to Husband and had a wonderful time eating saucy chips and toast.
Cocktails at Buena Vista Social Cafe
Later that evening we met the parents at the Buena Vista Social Cafe in Big Bay. These were our drinks…
Sunset at Buena Vista Social Cafe, Big Bay
Mum and me enjoying the sunset.
Buena Vista Social Cafe.
Husband and dad smiling back at me. I ate a burger much like the one in the ad on the door behind Husband.
Buena Vista Social Club burger
See? Enormous. Had to bring some of it home for the doggies.

That’s all, folks! Hope it’s a relaxing one all round. πŸ™‚
