While we weren’t at work for the past week in full, it sure was a busy one as we sorted quite a bit of admin, had a mini vacation and still spent quite a few long hours in our offices…

Saturday, 29 July 2017: New Village Place Cafe menu, Uni Mil rugby and Orient sushi dins
We were intrigued by the new menu at Village Place Cafe on Saturday morning – note my cappuccino with heart-shaped biscuit and French toast topped with bacon, banana and nuts. Scrumdiddlyumptious, as the BFG would say.
We collected Husband’s brother and dad to support the local rugby team, Uni Mil or ‘Millies’, at Theo Marais Park. The wind was blowing away but luckily the main team had enough bluster of their own to secure a win.
We’d planned an Andrews family dinner that evening to celebrate Spec’s 35th birthday and new job, along with other things. We opted for The Orient at Seaside Village for sushi, and I had sweet-sour chicken with the chocolate spring rolls to start.
Sunday, 30 July 2017: Fancy French toast and sunny Sunday afternoons
We started our Sunday at Poplars at D’Aria in Durbanville. There was a chill in the air so we sat inside even though the outside setting looked very inviting. Note my amazing French toast.
We had our traditional Sunday afternoon treat at the Driftwood Cafe – that’s a custard shake for me and a draught beer for Husband. See the pretty birdie flying overhead and sunset from Mum’s that eve.
Monday, 31 July 2017: One night’s stay at Old Mac Daddy
Following a lazy lie-in it was time to pack our bags as we’d booked a mid-week break at Old Mac Daddy in Elgin. Lol at this photo. The wind was so strong at the top of Sir Lowry’s Pass we decided to include this photo as proof. #Messyhairdontcare.
Hidden in the Elgin Valley, Old Mac Daddy promises a getaway with a difference. Note the Airstream trailers, chilly pool and swing chairs on our porch.
The trailers are highly detailed – we stayed in The Birdie and my parents were in The Dream, which comes complete with scary naked-lady pillow.
Ahh. My favourite. Relaxing with a freshly brewed cuppa java in a peaceful setting. That’s just what we did after settling into our trailer.
Introducing the beach at Old Mac Daddy! You can swing in hammocks, sip a cocktail, take a family photo or try your hand at Sup boarding.
Next stop, off for an explore! Husband tried his hand at stand-up paddling or Supping at the Old Mac Daddy ‘beach’ – he took to it like a fish to water. Not meaning that he fell in, we’re Aquarians so natural water masters, remember?
Husband started talking about ‘bucket lists’ after seeing these bucket lights in the main eating barn at Old Mac Daddy. That’s also where we watched the sunset and had cocktails and dins.
This is the sunset I mentioned. Brittle and wintery.
The dins I mentioned – I went for the jalapeno poppers top left and apple pie-cheesecake (yes, cheesecake topped with apple pie) bottom right, mom had the Mexican burger bottom left, Husband had the chicken-prawn jambalaya curry in the middle and dad had the pizza top right.
Tuesday, 1 August 2017: Rainy doggy beach walkies
It was back to the barn for breakfast first thing on Tuesday. We then spent some time relaxing in our trailer before check out time.
It was a cold, rainy day – see the rainbow we snapped out of the Elgin Valley, and happy sandy doggies after a brief walk on the beach in the drizzle.

Friday, 10 February 2017: Photoshop diploma and FUE date night
The first thing I did on getting home from work last Friday was go through the final lesson and quiz for my diploma in Photoshop through Shaw Academy. I squeaked by with 99%.
To celebrate my diploma and Husband finally having a few days off work, we set off for the Festive Underground Eatery of FUE, where I had this monster shake on my last birthday, before ‘freak shakes’ were a thing. They have a Friday night date night special of two burgers, two fries and a shake to share for R199…
The monster coffee shake that we ‘shared’ – Husband had a sip and no more as we were worried all that caffeine would affect his already shaky sleep patterns from working night shift.
Saturday, 11 February 2017: Airport collection and Petiscos dins
Bertie’s previous toy/TV-watching companion had become a grotty raggedy thing, so Husband presented him with a new friend – Monkey – first thing on Saturday. Bertie set about removing Monkey’s eyes, with a few licks as though to say sorry for hurting Monkey. Such a funny dog.
We headed off to the nearest Wimpy for breakfast before our airport trip to collect the parents. I went for a toasted cheese and Wimpy coffee, Husband had a Coke and streaky bacon breakfast with extra cheese griller.
Precious cargo safely collected from the airport, we headed back home to wait on an important delivery…
A fish tank! We’d been buying accessories over the weeks and finally ordered this tank last weekend as a combined birthday present to ourselves, for delivery on Saturday. No fishies in there yet as the water is being filtered and chemically altered to be just right – another week and it should be ready.
After a few more ‘Saturday things’ we were all feeling peckish and you can’t go wrong with a meal at Petiscos. Husband went for the hot chicken curry, the parents tried the hake and mussel combos, and I went for the can’t-miss chicken xai xai and Lindt Flake shake. Best!

We were done and dusted early enough to catch the sunset from Blouberg beachfront – note the males were brave enough to go knee-deep in the icy water.
Sunday, 12 February 2017: Braai with all the parents
If it’s Sunday and the Andrewses are around, it must be braai time. We braaied at ours on Sunday afternoon, with both sets of parents in attendance. All the food was delicious and there were lots of laughs.
Tuesday, 14 February 2017: BrandLove CX Trends talk, Woodbridge Island lunch and watering parents’ garden
Each time I attend an event held by BrandLove I feel there’s more and more to learn from them. Their latest customer experience trends event took place on Tuesday at the 360 Business Parks space in Paarden Eiland. This was the packed room in attendance.
Conference complete and on leave for a few days, I met Husband and his dad at Ilha in Woodbridge Island for a snack while his mum was out meeting former colleagues. We shared a portion of their bacon-feta jalapeno poppers, with Father-in-law opting for an omelette (despite it being afternoon time), and Husband and I shared the chicken schnitzel and chips. Yes, that is yet another coffee shake you see before me 🙂
Due to water restrictions in the Cape, we’re only allowed to water our gardens at certain times, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, using buckets not hoses. As the parents were here on a Saturday and a Tuesday, we popped in to water the garden and also give the doggies a tour before the official move in a month or so. There was lots of exploring!
Bassie decided my lap was the best spot to sit and wait while the others did what they could to water the garden with buckets.
Wednesday, 15 February 2017: Birthday relaxing, family lunch and doggy beach walk
I’ve been taking my birthday off work for a good few years now. There’s nothing better than sleeping in, especially as the day flies by with all the calls and messages that come in. I also had the chance to read with my feet up and some caramel tea – of course Bassie wedged in beside me.
Husband and father-in-law joined my dad and his weekly pool tournament with his neighbourhood friends. Here they all are at Poole in Parklands.
I’d been chomping at the bit to try the deliciousness of All in the Kitchen for a while now. They recently moved from Boy de Goede circle to Marine Drive, but close at 6pm and don’t open on weekends. Seeing as we’d all be available we booked a table for lunch on my birthday. The meal of the day was roast beef with roast potatoes – see top left – the cappuccinos were strong and the coffee shakes were delicious. Everyone ordered the ‘meal of the day’ apart from me. That’s because…
Look. at. that. CAKE! I’d seen a preview of the ‘cake of the day’ on All in the Kitchen’s Facebook page and just knew I’d be going for this, the Nutella chocolate cake. It came complete with birthday candle and singing – just delicious!
After a brief nap it was time to walk off some of that food, and what better way to do so than at the beach with the doglets? You can make out Father-in-law, Mother-in-law, Husband and Bertie in this shot from Kreeftebaai – Bassie stayed out of view with me.
It was a treat having someone else along to take photos during our walkies. Love Bertie shaking himself after his swim in the sea and the contented looks on both doggies’ faces once back home again.

Thursday, 16 February 2017: Bread & Butter breakfast, Captain’s Kitchen cocktails
As we were both still on leave for the day, we decided on breakfast at Bread & Butter for the parents’ final meal with us before they returned home. I opted for the cheese and ham on sweet potato bread, Husband had the salmon eggs benedict and the parents each had the ‘hen’ breakfast.
We ended up at Captain’s Kitchen at Eden on the Bay in Big Bay that afternoon. I tried the blue crush-topped, pineapple-y Captain’s Sunset cocktail while Husband went for his firm favourite, the Long Island Ice Tea. The perfect way to round out a few days of leave.

Saturday, 19 March 2016: News Cafe breakfast, Burgundy Estate golf and Espana paella
Husband wanted the pulled pork eggs ben from News Cafe last Saturday morning, so that’s just what he got!
For me, the early bird muesli jar – ate every mouthful.
Saturday’s chores sorted, we headed off to Burgundy Estate’s mashee golf course, where Husband and Dad had planned a game of golf. This is the outer wall of Espana restaurant, on the same grounds.

Sunday, 20 March 2016: Doggy tummy tickles, outdoor eating at Ons Huisie
We couldn’t start our Sunday without tickling these sweet doggy bellies. Proof that Bertie’s mainly a white doggie with brown cape and mask.
We’d not been to Ons Huisie in a while so ventured that side for brekkie. This is me with my cappuccino, wind was a-blowing and it certainly felt like Autumn had reached Cape Town.

Monday, 21 March 2016; Heritage Day at Wimpy and Banana Jam
This picture is not an illusion. Husband and I both ate the exact same thing on Monday – as it was a public holiday we were finally able to try the ‘Double up’ breakfast at Wimpy, where you get two for the price of one.
After a day exploring the factory stores in Kenilworth, we ended up at Banana Jam for a late lunch. All hungry, we started off with these ‘grilled poppers’ as a starter, wrapped in bacon.
Husband opted for the El Presidente burger – there’s a grilled chicken patty, chorizo, cheese and jalapenos under all that pepper. 😉
If I see banana split on the menu, that’s what I’m having…
The coconut shake at Banana Jam is among the best I’ve ever tasted.

Tuesday, 22 March: Taproom lunch at Devil’s Peak Brewing Company
This is where the parents took me for lunch of Tuesday – my first solo day of leave without Husband. Situated in ‘that angled building’ in Salt River, the Taproom is a treat for the eyes – and nose. You can’t get away from the hunger-enhancing scent of hops in there.
So much to choose from! This was Dad’s Pale Ale and the ‘so many choices’ menu.
Most amazing grilled cheese. It’s three layers of sammich, with Swiss cheese on top and served with a delightful pesto-tomato soup on the side.
Dad ended up with the sausage platter. All homemade, served with toasted rye, wholegrain mustard and sauerkraut. He left not a crumb on his plate.
That’s either a high five, five stars, or a friendly wave from Dad. Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
Wednesday, 23 March 2016: Carlucci’s lunch break
We didn’t head far from home on Wednesday – just up to the beachfront for a quick deli bite to eat. These were our drinks – latte for me thick, healthy red and green juice for Mom and Dad.
Could not resist the caramel cheesecake. Shared with Mum.
As seen on the walls at Carlucci’s, I just don’t know which of these Table Mountain-inspired artworks I’d choose – probably the middle one as it’s very purple.
Thursday, 24 March 2016: Coffee at Royal Bavarian Bakery
On Thursday we headed off bright and early to the V&A Waterfront for a spot of window shopping, coffee inhaling and movie-watching. Didn’t our cappuccinos look lovely together?
