Winter 2018: Coffee, gnocchi and suspicious dogs

We’ve been having quite a bit of work done around the house lately and with all the much-needed rain finally bucketing down the doggies have been quite on edge, as you’ll see from the snaps below…

Friday, 22 June 2018: Cooped up as house is painted

Dogs on couch
I worked from home on Friday as I had stacks to do to finish off our Cannes Lions coverage, so skipping the commute to the office was a plus – and as it was international’bring your dog to work day’, I brought the work to them, as I kept an eye on the doglets while we had various walls painted. They weren’t too happy about watching me work, but spent quality time on the couch with their dad once he got home that evening.

Saturday, 23 June 2018: Perfect winter food, gnocchi bolognese at the Italian Club

Wimpy breakfast
We had lots of mall-admin things on the agenda for Saturday, so we started off with a Wimpy breakfast. See Husband’s extra large cappuccino, my regular Wimpy coffee, his streaky bacon with extra cheese griller and my flapjacks with fruit salad.
Sad dog
Bassie couldn’t decide whether to be excited to be confined in a room with us, while other parts of the house were painted, or to be Very Sad that she wasn’t free to run around outside. This is her in Very Sad mode.
Dog in mirror
Who’s a pretty boy, then? Bertie spent the time staring at himself in the mirror, just like this. Such a handsome fellow!
Cappuccino at Makro
My Saturday afternoon pick-me-up cappuccino while wandering the aisles at Makro.
Gnocchi bolognese at the Italian Club
When the sky is white and the wind is cold, my belly thinks of just one thing – gnocchi bolognese. So that’s what we had for dins at the Italian Club and oh my goodness, it was delicious! See my coffee shake and Husband’s glass of red.

Sunday, 24 June 2018: Tin cup coffee, roast chicken and potatoes

Breakfast at The Daily
Sunday morning breakfast at The Daily in Seaside Village was all about tin cups (espresso with condensed milk), anchovy toast, savoury muffins and eggs florentine with a side of bacon. Yum.
Coffee tasting tray
We heard, ‘Hey!’ Looked up and there were my parents! They joined our table and both the boys enjoyed the coffee tasting tray – a triple-shot cappuccino, mini tin cup and mini con panna (with cream).
Roast chicken and potatoes.
More comfort food for lupper at Mum’s that evening – roast chicken, veg and potatoes with gravy. My best!
Trifle
Jelly + custard + cream + sponge cake = trifle at Mum’s that evening.

Thursday, 28 June 2018: Office birthday doughnuts

Doughnuts
Doughnuts! It was the man who built Bizcommunity’s birthday on Thursday, so he treated us to these delicious doughnuts and muffins. Just what we needed!

That’s all, folks! There’s more wet weather and housework on the cards this weekend but we’ll do what we can to enjoy the small moments in between that make us smile.

Lifehouse and Collective Soul at GrandWest Arena

Last weekend we did a great many things as usual, key among them was seeing Lifehouse and Collective Soul live at GrandWest Arena…

Friday, 2 February 2018: Work meetings

Johanna McDowell
Last Friday was a super-busy one, with two high-profile telephonic interviews and a face-to-face with Johanna McDowell in the coffee shop beneath my office. Was so good to finally meet her, you can click here and here for the resulting articles I wrote about her recent accomplishments.

Saturday, 3 February 2018: Mexican benedict at La Rocca

Breakfast at La Rocca.
We started our weekend at Canal Walk. Husband had a strong cappuccino with the Mexican eggs benedict at La Rocca, I had the pumpkin-spice latte and Jump jar filled with berries, yoghurt, granola and banana.
Blouberg sea
The sea was calm and so refreshing, I stood ankle-deep in it myself when Husband had his weekly dip – that’s saying something.
Cape Town Table Mountain
Table Mountain in the distance. We love Cape Town!
Braai food and chocolate cake.
T’was just us at the braai at Husband’s parents that week. See the doggies being sweet on the couches, all sorts of braai foodies and a ganache-y caramelly chocolate cake for dessert.
Dog with dog on head
Bassie says she didn’t really mind sitting with her brother’s dog on her head as a blanket, as it was quite chilly on Saturday evening.

Sunday, 4 February 2018: Village Place breakfast, Lifehouse and Collective Soul at Grand West Arena

Breakfast at Village Place
See the pretty menu and pistachio-coloured seating area, as well as my banting flapjacks with yoghurt and berries, and Husband’s pesto breakfast.
Shortbread biscuit and cappuccino at Village Place Cafe
The little heart-shaped shortbread biscuits are such a sweet touch.
Read with dogs
Coffee and magazine with the doggies later that morning.
Chicken and potatoes and scones
Little Miss Bassie couldn’t decide which was her best side to show us at her other Grannie-Grampa’s house on Sunday – a proper lunchtime visit for once as we’d be at GrandWest for Collective Soul later that evening. Also see the chicken with mini taters and homemade scones with jam and cream (and coffee) for afters.
Collective Soul and Lifehouse at GrandWest Arena.
Tada! Presenting Lifehouse and Collective Soul, live in concert at GrandWest Casino! They were both truly excellent. Click here if you missed my full review on Biz earlier this week!

Tuesday, 6 February 2018: Healthy office birthday cake

Woolworths carrot cake and lemon poppyseed muffins
T’was my colleague Ruth’s birthday on Monday, but as she’d cleverly taken a day’s leave then, she brought in ‘healthy’ baked goods on Tuesday. The carrot cake and lemon-poppyseed muffins were yummy!

Thursday, 8 February 2018: After-work croissant and coffee catchup at Cafe Puka

Cafe Puka croissant and cappuccino
I met my friend Hasmita for a coffee catchup after work on Thursday. We’d last seen each other 7 years ago, when we did the advanced sub-editing course through Wits. Cafe Puka in Tamboerskloof was an excellent choice. Look at the enormous almond croissant we shared (cue shocked and delighted faces), each with a hazelnut cappuccino. And see the sweet doggie who decided to nap under my chair. He was so friendly.
Croissant and cappuccino at Cafe Puka
The hazelnut cappuccinos were not small, so you can only imagine how gigantic these croissants were. Flaky and pull-apart perfect!
Oreo McFlurries
Husband fetched me from the bus and we treated ourselves to Oreo McFlurries that evening.

That’s all, folks. We’re finally due a spot of rain later this evening – holding thumbs!

Pink flamingoes at the Nasdak & jealous owlie mug strikes again

It’s been a somewhat quiet, lonely week as Husband had to work last weekend and I was head-down preparing our coverage for the recent IAB Digital Summit and Bookmark Awards for the rest of it.

But we always have our happy moments sprinkled in-between…

Saturday, 11 March 2017: Hartlief’s breakfast, homegrown mielies for dins

Breakfast at Hartlief's Deli
As I was flying solo while Husband worked last weekend, Mum and Dad were kind enough to include me in their breakfast plans. Here we are smiling at/because of our food at Hartlief’s Deli in Gardens. (Yes, Mum’s having soup for breakfast.)
Hartliefs cappuccinos
Cappuccinos always get the morning off to the right start.
Homegrown mielies
For dins that evening we got to sample Husband’s first batch of homegrown mielies and they were absolutely delicious – glossy and fresh and so tasty that even Bertie was interested…

Sunday, 12 March 2017: Couch reading and suburban sunsets

Read book with dog
Sunday was all about reading on the couch for me and Bassie.
Dogs on couch
We spent much of the afternoon like this.
bolognese pasta
Mmm, it was bolognese pasta with parmesan for Sunday lupper at Mum’s.
Fruity custard flan.
For dessert, this fruity custard flan, yum!
Sunset
The sky went all pastel pretty at sunset that eve.

Wednesday, 15 March 2017: Muffins and meetings

Chocolate muffins.
Wednesday was a meeting packed, two chocolate-y muffins kind of day. The owlie mug was jealous.
Liquorice office
My Wednesday highlight was a visit to the Liquorice office space in town. They’re quite the bustling agency and did very well at the Bookmark Awards (read my interview with them for proof)!

Thursday, 16 March 2017: Experian Mosaic tool launch at the Nasdak

Media24 building
In addition to the Bookmark Awards in JHB, it was also the launch of Experian’s next-gen customer segmentation tool at the Nasdak in the Media24 building in Cape Town’s CBD.
View of harbour from Nasdak at Media24
I’d been to the media24 Building before but never to the ‘Nasdak’ (Naspers’ dak) on its 26th floor. Look at those views, all across the harbour!
Media24 building Cape Town.
But just look at the view of Table Mountain from the other end of the building! I’d never get any work done if this was my office.
Experian event
Some of the sights of the afternoon. All very interesting for consumer trends research marketers.
Muffins
Morning muffins to kick our brains into gear.
Pink flamingoes
The theme was ‘Through the looking glass’ from Alice in Wonderland, hence these ‘Drink me’ pink drinks.
Media24 Nasdak
T’was a packed venue and a most impressive event.
Burger King office drop off
I got back to the office just in time to be ululated at and presented with Burger King’s new boerie burger.

That’s all, folks! We’re both off this weekend so yay for some much needed relaxing and napping and taking it easy…
