In this latest update we finally get to my pics from Design Indaba, which began on the same day as
Bertie’s birthday and took us to the end of last week.

Wednesday, 1 to Friday, 3 March 2017: Design Indaba at the Artscape
There was just as much to see inside, with a Woolies coffee station that made delicious honey-nut lattes, food trucks, art installations, book passageways and more. Always a delight and more than a little overwhelming!
Lots of creative oddities were on display before we even went into the main Artscape venue. Note the walk of fame, trees growing lips and eyes and more.

Design Indaba done for me and Husband having rested all day from his week of working night shift, we decided on dins at Doodles on the beachfront. I tried their Bar-One shake and Husband had a draught with the chicken burger.
Saturday, 4 March 2017: Xai xai chicken at Petiscos
When Husband got home from work we set off for Petisco’s for their xai xai chicken fillet, which we barely finished. I also tried their iced mocha shake.
Sunday, 5 March 2017: Rocomamas ‘surprise me’ freak shake, Sunset Beach jumps and Bertie’s new collar
Rocomama’s is always a treat, especially if you’re brave enough to try the ‘Surprise me’ freak shake option. I ended up with a caramel-chocolate concoction bursting with bits of honeycomb! Click here for a reminder of our review on our last visit.
What do you do on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Cape Town? You see who can jump higher on the beach, of course. We headed off to Sunset Beach as it has a lovely view of the mountain and soft, soft sand for jumping. Here is Husband’s attempt…
I think mine was much, much higher (Husband says to notice his eyes are over the top of the mountain in his version, but also note how much taller he is than me!)
On Sunday afternoon we explored the new ‘Leadville’ doggy park in Sunningdale and Bertie was gifted with his new birthday collar – look at that happy grin!
Wednesday 8 March 2017: Woodstock sunrise
I snapped the sun rising over the mountain and train tracks on my way into work on Wednesday, and needed a ‘coffee and mini choc’ treat come afternoon. What a long week!
Thursday, 9 March 2017: FoodLover’s breakfast and Catharina’s new lunch menu review
We both had the day off work on Thursday (yay), so after a much-needed lie-in we shared the halloumi stack breakfast at our nearest FoodLover’s Market. That’s also my cappuccino top left.
After some general relaxing it was time to set off Catharina’s at Steenberg Estate, as we’d been invited to review their new lunch menu. We’ve taken a variation of this photo on both previous visits, see here and here.

Friday, 2 December 2016: Bizcommunity’s end-of-year lunch at Cape Point Vineyards, Noordhoek
We were so lucky with the weather last Friday, as our end-of-year office party was being held at Cape Point Vineyard in Noordhoek. What a gorgeous venue! The inside is simply beautiful but the outside area is a clear winner as you have views across to the Noordhoek beach.
Look at that delicious food! The top shot is the snacky platters brought to the table for all to share, then you can see what I opted for from the choices per lunch course: my beef carpaccio starter, rib-eye mains with tomatoes still on the vine and a caramel-macadamia nut cheesecake dessert. So delicious.
I spent lots of time laughing with my colleague Jess, who moved from Cape Town to Johannesburg earlier this year.

Saturday, 3 December 2016: Breakfast at Company’s Garden, weekend beach walkies and paella at Espana
Saturday was our last full day with Husband’s parents as they were making the long trek back to Joburg the next day, so we decided on breakfast at Company’s Garden in town. Three of us went for cappuccinos, one had a coke, and three went for the eggs benedict while one tried something new: the apple-berry crumble. So yummy, as you’ll see below.

Bellies full, we wandered around the gardens looking at all the squirrels and pigeons and plants. I also tested out this egg chair, and a squirrel darted back and forth in front of me.

Next up, a beach visit. Good shot of how the doggies go in different directions at the beach. All the while scrambling over rocks and dipping feeties in the sea.

For our final dins with Husband’s parents we ate at a firm family favourite, Espana in Burgundy Estate. Here is Husband demonstrating the outside and almost blending in with the decor inside.
To eat, we all went for the paella and all ate every morsel. My father-in-law also opted for their cinnamon-sugar pancakes. A lovely night.

Sunday, 4 December 2016: Greens breakfast and 2016 Christmas trees
Parents safely on the long road back home, we stopped in at Greens in Plattekloof Village for breakfast. I had the waffle with caramel, banana and icecream, while Husband had the mushroom-spinach benedict. That’s my cappuccino and his breakfast Cola.
Amongst some weekend admin I also admired the pretty Christmas tree in a local nursery on the left, put up my own tree that evening and helped Mum decorate hers when we went for dins that eve.
Monday 5 to Thursday, 8 December 2016: Final team lunch at Fat Cactus
T’was the birthday of one of my colleagues on Friday and as she’d taken the day off we didn’t get to celebrate with her at our end-of-year. She brought in all sorts of deliciousness on Monday so we ‘cheers-ed’ her belatedly then.
We took a break from our desks for a few minutes of sunshine and spotted a little green chameleon trotting along. See how very green he is!
Thursday was our final team lunch of the year. We went across to the Fat Cactus and were back at our desks just over an our later. I went for the pulled-pork soft tacos and espresso shake.
It’s another two weeks of work, then Husband’s brother comes down to stay with us for a few weeks over the Christmas break. Exciting times! 🙂

Saturday, 29 October 2016: Squirrel-greeting at Company’s Garden, Intaka Island tour
We were up very early on Saturday to stand in the collections queue at Home Affairs for our new IDs (only the first 100 in queue get to collect). Here is Husband outside a lovely tiger sprayed in the CBD.
Mission complete, we were hungry and decided on Company’s Garden. The eating area is set among such pretty greenery and we were there early enough to have a choice of tables.
I started off with a flat white, and sliver of perfectly dunkable biscotti.
The banana bread French toast, served with bacon, marscapone cheese and strawberries is always a win, as is the Eggs benedict served with salmon and spinach that Husband opted for.
These very tall trees make you feel very small, but not quite as small as the squirrels that scamper about…
Like this curious little squirrel! We named him Nutmeg. He came over to nibble our fingers.
There were lots of inquisitive pigeons around, too.
We had more birds on the brain that day as our next stop was here: Our vessel for the early afternoon, in which we explored Intaka Island, in the heart of Century City. Intaka means bird in Xhosa and we sure did see a lot of them, even the elusive Peregrine Falcon.
Look at these three feathered friends, for example – we weren’t sure if they were going to hop onboard with us or back in the water for a swim. They chose the latter option.
Just one of the intriguing displays at Intaka Island – this is a wall of ‘air plants’ – their roots grow out of soil.
Of course Dad and Husband explored some of the steam engines before we set off across the canal.

The weather was just right, with a light breeze and lots of sunshine to keep us warm and happy.
Only Husband was paying such attention to the guided tour that he didn’t turn for this shot.

We’d worked up quite an appetite by then so decided to meet up again at Jerry’s Burger Bar in Blouberg, close to home. Look at that amazing view – half the reason it’s always packed.
I had to try the pina colada shake. Was just as creamy/coconutty/pineapple-y as you’d expect, with no alcohol.

Sunday, 30 October 2016: Sampling Wimpy’s new sweetie-topped milkshakes
Husband felt like the Bullseye breakfast from Cafe Lacomia on Sunday morning, so that’s just what he had. You can see my cappuccino with two tiny biscuits in the saucer. Also ate a toasted sammidge, no pics of it alas.
Sunday afternoon was the perfect time to try out Wimpy’s new ‘topped with sweeties’ milkshake. I went for the coffee option, Husband had banana.
Monday, 31 October 2016: First day of BrandLove’s Customer Design experience course at 360 Business Parks, Paarden Eiland
Just loved this wall art in the entrance to 360 Business Parks, on Wessex Road in Paarden Eiland.
Two of my favourite workshop sights – coffee cups and boxes of Lego!
One of the Lego scenes I created. It looks like fun and games – and is – but also requires quite a bit of deep thinking and even a certificate of attendance for completing the course.
My little ones came to fetch me from the bus! Bassie seems to have an urgent message to share here, along the lines of “Mom, that other dog is shouting out the window. Help.”

Saturday, 11 June 2016: Sampling Grande Provence’s slow-cooked Winter delights
The day dawned cold and grey but that didn’t dampen our spirits as we were excited about the lunch we’d be filling our bellies with soon. Bertie also shared some morning kisses to broaden our smiles.
Our wonderful lunch venue for the day – Grande Provence in Franschhoek. Highly recommended!

Just look at that fire – we were seated at the closest table to it. Those cheese straws were the stuff of legends.

Tree-lined streets just begging to be explored as we slowly rolled out of town, so explore them we did…
We ended up having a wander around Boschendal, another gorgeous afternoon setting.
These chairs are just asking to be lazed in! You can order a picnic on the grounds and do just that. We were obviously too full to do so on this visit, but watch this space!
With such woodsy scenery, little wonder the grounds are riddled with little squirrels, running here and there.

Sunday, 12 June 2016: Breakfast at The Daily Cafe, Eden on the Bay
Surprisingly we were hungry when we woke on Sunday, so we followed our noses towards the sea and ended up at The Daily Cafe in Eden on the Bay. I had to try the ‘tin cup’ – espresso sweetened with condensed milk. No sugar required!
To eat, t’was a very tough choice but I settled on these ‘lemon poppy seed berry cheesecake’ pancakes. Such a good choice, definitely going back for these again!
Husband opted for the breakfast wrap. He made appreciative noises after every mouthful.
The weather had brightened a bit after the previous day’s gloom, so we decided to go coal picking. Here is Husband trotting along and picking bits of coal out from among the mussel shells strewn along the coastline.

After the Springboks were thrashed in the rugby on Saturday, it seemed only fitting to eat this ‘Springbok milktart’ at Mum’s on Sunday eve. Teehee we’re a vengeful bunch.
Thursday, 16 June 2016: Youth Day eggs benedict
I was rather snuffly on this week’s public holiday so unfortunately neglected to take lots of pics, but you’re not missing much as we slept in very late and t’was a day of relaxing and retail therapy… and we went back to The Daily. Here is Husband’s salmon eggs benedict post-peppering but pre-Tabasco saucing.

Oh long weekend, how we’ve missed you! We’re in for three full days of relaxing and recharging our batteries, perfect for the suddenly chilly wave of weather we’re facing. But first, a recap of last week’s highlights…

Saturday, 23 April 2016: Breakfast at Primi Blouberg, lupper at Black Bull
The need for coffee was strong in this one last Saturday, so I opted for the large latte at Primi. It was just right. You can’t see the lovely view of Table Mountain behind me, alas…
Husband opted for the eggs florentine, enjoyed every mouthful.
My ‘croissant’ turned out to be two little ones, both as fresh as fresh can be and still piping hot. Perfect with the latte.
Much, much later that day – after a fair deal of chores, Saturday tasks and studying (Husband got 100% for his weekly graphic design quiz, so smart!) – we headed down the road to the Black Bull diner. Husband tried this craft beer.
For me? A strawberry milkshake, of course. Was very pink and creamy.
Husband was very hungry. so started off with a spicy salmon handroll. Ate all the wasabi and ginger, too.
For mains, he went for the pork sausages with mash and gravy. Seems the ‘ bangers-and-mash-capades‘ of 2016 have begun!
I went for the starter nachos – truly enough for a main meal, especially if you load them with all these sides.
Sunday, 24 April 2016: Breakfast at Company’s Garden
Our beautiful brunch spot – Madame Zingara’s in Company’s Garden.
We wanted a breakfast to remember on Sunday, as we woke up late and were feeling lazy. Here is Husband sipping on his breakfast Cola at Madame Zingara’s in Company’s Garden. We snapped up the last table and got our orders in just before ‘breakfast ended’.
Mmm. Flat white with biscotti on the side. Tiny cup so it went down far too fast.
Husband had been dreaming of this eggs benedict, complete with spinach, rocket and salmon to dress up as you like.
The French Toast is just delightful at Company’s Garden as it’s made from banana bread and topped with rashers of crispy bacon, a lump of creme fraiche and lots of sliced strawberries. Loved sitting in the sun!
Bellies full, we went for a little explore as you can’t visit Company’s Garden and leave before you’ve seen a squirrel or three. There are lots of majestic trees to gaze at.
And suddenly they were everywhere! If you simply kneel down and open your hand to them they hop right up to see what you have to offer. Even the pigeons are curious as they know the squirrels get lots of treats.
Tuesday, 26 April 2016: Fireside doggies (again)
Husband lit the fire the minute he got home on Tuesday evening, to celebrate it being a public holiday the next day. The doggies were very interested in the crackling coals we added, collected from the beach.
Fire lit, I sat in front of it with a book and before long Bertie was trying to share my space.
Wednesday, 27 April 2016: Freedom Day breakfast at News Cafe
We knew mum and dad would be at News Cafe for breakfast on Wednesday, so got up earlier than expected and surprised them at their table. We enjoyed the double-shot cappuccinos.
Husband went for the pulled pork benedict, the rest of us had the early bird special.
It’s real ‘stay warm and dry if you can’ weather so expect another lazy update next week. Until then, enjoy yourselves! 🙂
