This past week has been busier than usual as I’ve been in Durban covering the Loeries Awards for work since Wednesday. But lots happened before then…
Friday, 16 August 2019: Bus station walkies
When I got off the bus from work last Friday, all the male members of the household were at the MyCiti station to greet me. Bertie was a very good boy on his walkies while Bassie stayed home with her granny.He (Bertie, not Hubcap) stopped to sniff at things and rustle in the shrubbery along the walkway, but didn’t bark at anyone or anything – a different doggie to the shouter on car trips!
Saturday, 17 August 2019: Roadtrip to Paarl, to Eat at Perdeberg
We breakfasted at Reload, Flamingo Vlei on Saturday and sampled their ‘breakfast bun’ special. Husband had a flat white with his, I went for the peppermint-choc latte.We had an open road on our way to Paarl to review the winter ‘chef’s special trio’ at the new ‘Eat at Perdeberg’ restaurant.It was perfect weather for sitting outside, so sit outside we did. See the main Perdeberg Cellar building, as well as their grape juice bottles, my strawberry shake and the wines Husband sampled.Some of the deliciousness of Eat at Perdeberg – see the bobotie springrolls, served samoosa-style with the most delicious homemade chilli, tomato, coriander and ginger jam; the braai boxes for two; their strawberry shake, the chef’s trio special of oxtail, venson pie and chicken curry with veg and chips on the side; and Husband’s glass of red. We called these pics ‘calm before the storm’ – see the waves crashing on the rocks in the background! Husband also had his customary weekend dip in the sea.By Saturday evening we were a little peckish again so see the Otomi (chilli con carne, coriander, spiced yoghurt) pizza we shared at Col’cacchio, Seaside Village. Sunday, 18 August 2019: Bica brekkie, Burger King lupper and sleepy dogs
Breakfast is served! This is what we ordered from Cafe Bica in Bayside Mall on Sunday morning. See Hubcap’s chorizo-egg croissant, as well as my banana pancakes and one of our flat whites.Hubcap and baby dogs napping in various spots around the house.Mum was a little under-the-weather on Sunday, so we opted for Burger King takeaways for lupper. See our extra-long chilli cheese burgers and cans of ‘coffee Coke’.
Tuesday, 20 August 2019: Tribe coffee break, family dinner at Rocomama’s
I met Husband for a quick coffee at Tribe, across the road from my offices on Tuesday. See our nice strong flat whites.Gords was in town for the night on Tuesday, so we dined at Rocomama’s. Spec also drove through for the ‘family dins’.Hubcap and Dad enjoying themselves at Rocomama’s.

Friday, 19 July 2019: Rocomama’s dins
Little girl wrapped up in her blanket on the bed while watching me work from home last Friday.Husband felt for Rocomama’s for dins last Friday evening, so we headed out as soon as he got home from work. See my creme brulee shake, his very hot chicken wings, and a cute bumper sticker we spotted on our way back home.Superdogs! These two are so funny. they insist on being wrapped in blankets, then drag them on the floor behind them like superhero capes when they go explore an interesting noise elsewhere.
Saturday, 20 July 2019: Limnos brekkies, Doodles nachos and angel fish
We started our Saturday with some mall admin so stopped at Limons Bakery for a bite to eat. See my grilled ham-and-cheese croissant and Husband’s cooked breakfast – our cappuccinos were effectively free.We were a little early for our movie at GrandWest casino on Saturday afternoon so stopped at Vida e Caffe for a coffee first. See my standard cappuccino and Husband’s triple.We stopped at Doodles on the beachfront for an early dins that evening. See the sunset, as well as Husband’s glass of red wine and my plate of cheesy nachos – free as we used an Entertainer voucher.More snaps of the sunset, also see Husband’s angel fish with veggies. Sunday, 21 July 2019: The Daily breakfast and a mid-winter sea dip
We breakfasted at The Daily at Seaside Village on Sunday, with Husband’s parents. See my tin cup (condensed milk coffee) as well as banana-bread French toast top right, as well as Husband’s potato waffles topped with poached egg and Hollandaise sauce, a chicken-mayo sandwich with side salad for his mum, and Father-in-Law’s basic brekkie with decaf cappuccino.Travel-inspired decor at The Daily in Seaside Village.Proof we were all there.We stopped at Husband’s favourite swimming hole later that afternoon so he could have a dip in the sea. Saturday, 6 July 2019: Rocomama’s BlackStar burger
We did our Discovery Health checks at Bayside Mall first thing on Saturday so popped into Mugg & Bean as soon as we’d been given the all-clear. See our cappuccinos and corner table.To eat, Husband went for the full farmhouse option, while I had the choc-chip flapjack stack – one went home with me for afternoon tea.My Saturday afternoon in a picture: Coffee, dogs, blankets and books.Pretty girl looking concerned but actually feeling nice and snug after a weekend afternoon nap.Sweet boy dog with neck extended for full warmth in front of the fire.Husband took a break that afternoon so we all headed off to Rocomama’s together for a few fast favourites. Sunday, 7 July 2019: Breakfast at The Hart, Melkbos
Husband would be working for most of Sunday so we got up early to sort some weekend admin – and to have breakfast, of course. See our table at The Hart Breadhouse and Bakery in Melkbos. I had the single bacon benedict and a cappuccino, Husband opted for a flat white, Coke Zero and the breakfast salad filled with salmon. Delicious.Sweet Bertie boy snuggled up warm in his sister’s clam shell bed.My handsome, tired boys, much later that night. Insert heart-eyes emoji.

Tuesday, 4 June 2019: Terroir lunch at Kleine Zalze
On Tuesday, 4 June I was invited to celebrate Kleine Zalze’s second straight win as best New World Producer. Perfect way to prep for a media roadtrip – takeaway cappuccino from Tasha’s, then onto the shuttle!This view of the submerged windwill is visual proof that you’re almost in Stellenbosch.The wintery scene that met us at Terroir in Kleine Zalze, Stellenbosch.More pre-food moments at Terroir.The bread and antipasti on arrival, as well as stuffed chicken and Picanha steak. Thursday, 6 June: Doggy burger-bun beds and Rocomama’s dins with Gords
Sweet Bassie finally using her burger-bun bed when I worked from home on Thursday.Speaking of burgers… Gords was in town for a few days of business so stayed with us on Thursday night. We treated him to dins at our nearest Rocomama’s.Two milkshake slurpers in action! Gords had strawberry, I went for espresso. Yum.

We started our weekend with a dose of mall admin, so W Cafe in Woolworth’s, Table Bay Mall was our first stop. See my vanilla-cinnamon cappuccino and croissant French toast, as well as Husband’s chilli-egg omelette. Yes, this is a carbon copy of last Saturday’s breakfast!Husband far out to sea later that day. Mum let me know she had some fruit salad ready mid-morning last Friday when I was working from home, so I trotted across to her house.Bertie having a sunny nap while keeping me company on my work-from-home day.Sweet Bassie having cuddles with her Grampa later that afternoon.
Saturday, 18 May 2019: Roast lamb on the Weber
For our Saturday breakfast, we popped into Bread & Butter. See our flat whites as well as Husband’s salmon-chorizo-cream cheese omelette, and my half portion of bacon eggs benedict.Things had turned quite chilly by Saturday afternoon so we decided on a quick lamb roast on the Weber. Here’s the end result.Saturday afternoon feasting at the braai. No doggies pictured but there were right there, I promise.The end result – roast lamb fresh off the braai, with roast potatoes, green peas and a homemade minty sauce. Yum!Ha! Bassie looks very cross here. Think she was trying to leap from chair to table to meat and we stopped her in her tracks.
Sunday, 19 May 2019: Rocomama’s afternoon treats
A lone hadeda cawing in the back garden. It wasn’t there long before Bertie chased it away.T’was a Carlucci’s kind of Sunday morning – I had my go-to breakfast of cinnamon croissant with dirty chai latte, while Husband went for a flat white and the chorizo baked-egg pan.Odd clouds started rolling in later that day, with heavy rain following on Sunday night. That’s a cloud covering the base of Table Mountain, as seen from Sunset Beach.We headed to our local Rocomama’s for our Sunday afternoon treat of chilli-cheese fries, a draught for him and a butterscotch-toffee shake for her. Yum!

Saturday, 27 April 2019: Avengers Endgame at GrandWest Casino, cocktails at Catch22
We tried something different for breakfast on Saturday – Bean Authentic Coffee Roasters in Monte Vista, as found on the Entertainer app. See Husband’s cheddar-and-bacon ‘egglets’.Also at Bean Authentic – this delicious bacon, jalapeno, bacon, feta, cheddar and spicy mayo toastie.We watched Avengers: Endgame at GrandWest Casino on Saturday afternoon. As you can see, we splurged on the biggest box of popcorn we’d ever seen, especially as it was Avengers: Endgame themed. We did finish it, as the movie is three hours’ long…Next stop, Catch22 for some post-movie cocktails. The view is just gorgeous.Husband, busy with his Ol’ Spice mojito, featuring spiced rum, lime, mint, ginger, pineapple and soda.I went for the ‘Lava Me Long Time’. Served in a tiki glass, it’s a delicious blend of rum, coconut, lemongrass, lime, basil, blueberry and cranberry. The ice cubes mean there’s a little less in the glass than you think – that’s a good thing!
Sunday, 28 April 2019: Ruby anniversary lunch at Brass Bell
Husband’s parents were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary last weekend, so invited us for a celebratory meal at the Brass Bell in Kalk Bay.Full family shot, Spec attended, as well as Janet and Phil – we sat upstairs in the enclosed area, with a view of the wild ocean below.Oysters! Husband’s Mum ordered a portion for the table.See Husband enjoying some oysters and me with my Amarula Colada cocktail. Yum!My Amarula Colada again, a watchful gull statue along with some food – my beef burger and chips, and one of the fishy options.The happy couple, with their eldest and me.The tide pool at Brass Bell was flat and so inviting, if you ignored the nip in the air…Husband got into the tide pool behind me here, as we headed back towards St James’ side. Note my coffee as the weather got cold, fast once the sun vanished behind the mountain.
Wednesday, 1 May 2019: Sick Husband and Rocomama’s treats on Workers’ Day
Intercare Parklands was our first stop on Wednesday, as Husband woke up Very Ill – he even came home early from work the day before. Diagnosis: Full-blown influenza. Lucky I had the flu shot the previous week. So far, so good. We didn’t wait long, but coffee in the waiting area is always a good idea.Husband having a nap that afternoon.We had a Workers’ Day afternoon treat at Rocomama’s later that afternoon. See my espresso shake – yes, my second milkshake of the day, as I also had a peanut butter-toffee shake at Wimpy after Hubcapsicum’s doc visit (I got to order an adventurous drink as I’d already had a coffee at the doctor earlier) – as well as the chicken burger Husband and Mum opted for, and Dad with his Bud in a bottle.Mum and me at the Rocomama’s star wall.The doglets relaxing in the lounge at various stages of the week. Wednesday, 17 April 2019: Start-of-weekend dins at CTFM
Our gardener pointed out an enormous beehive in a corner of the garden, which we had removed. The bees were taken to safety, and we were left with lots of honeycomb!Bee rescue complete, we headed to CTFM in Seaside Village for a ‘welcome to the long weekend’ meal. See the parents’ prawns, my beef burger, Husband’s Teriyaki salmon and the top of my berry bomb gourmet shake.The whole family, enjoying our CTFM dins – especially as we used our Entertainer vouchers for added value!
Thuesday, 18 April 2019: Car service day, swing benching with Bassie
We had taken Thursday off from work as our car was booked in for a service, walking distance from home. That was our first stop on Thursday…Breakfast is much more satisfying if you’ve worked – made that walked – for it! See the lovely sun-dappled path, and our breakfast at Reload, Flamingo Vlei. Husband had the Turkish eggs and a double flat white, I had a peppermint-choc latte and the chicken-mayo bacon bagel. Just right, before the walk back home.Bassie loved sitting on the swing bench with me on Thursday evening.The tree is quite a sight when it’s all lit up! We ate outside that night.
Friday, 19 April 2019: Good Friday hot cross buns, Irish nachos and jalapeno poppers at Saint’s
We all breakfasted together at News Cafe on Friday morning. See my early bird full English breakfast.Sweet little Bassie was Very Interested in my chocolate hot cross bun, especially as I’d filled it with Caramel Treat. Caramel-chocolate hot cross buns were advertised anywhere, but none were in stock, so I made my own.We stopped in at Saint’s for a late-afternoon treat. See my cafe Capri – a latte with chocolate and coconut, as well as Husband’s spiked shake with black beer, Irish whiskey and Nutella, his ‘green hot’ jalapeno poppers wrapped in bacon and my ‘Irish nachos’. Yum!It was cold enough that evening for us to put our new fireplace to use for the first time. Bassie enjoyed it but Bertie LOVED it. See various phases of his evening enjoyment here.
Saturday, 20 April 2019: Velvet Cake Co’s Easter slice
Makro was our first stop on Saturday, so we ate at the in-store restaurant, Cafe De La Fe. See my toasted chicken mayo and Husband’s full cooked breakfast, as well as his large cream-topped cappuccino – my latte is just out of sight.Sweet Bertie boy stretched out to fully enjoy the Saturday sunshine.We popped in at Husband’s parents for a quick pre-Easter visit on Saturday afternoon. Sunday, 21 April 2019 Easter Sunday fondue fun at home
We had a mall admin morning on Sunday, so breakfasted at Woolworths Cafe. See my vanilla-cinnamon cappuccino and poached egg bowl, as well as Husband’s chilli omelette and double flat white.Husband made friends with what the Robben Island website tells us is a Cape Dwarf chameleon that had been exploring the garden. Much larger than the little guy from a few weeks ago, so it’s probably his dad or older brother. Click here if you’ve forgotten!Happy Easter! Monday, 22 April 2019: Easter Monday breakfast at On the Rocks, lupper at Rocomama’s
It was a crisp but beautiful day on Monday, so we started ours with breakfast at On the Rocks. See our cappuccinos as well as Husband’s croque Madame and my French toast with berries and ice cream.After much lazing around, we had an ‘end-of-the-holiday’ treat visit at Rocomama’s that afternoon. Tuesday, 23 April 2019: Chocolate bunnies to get back into work mode
The return to work on Tuesday was sweetened by the Lindt bunny waiting on my laptop.
Wednesday, 24 April 2019: Pre-work coffee treat at Tribe
Husband had a work meeting in town first thing on Wednesday, so dropped me off at work on the way. But first, coffee! We love the blend at Tribe, which is over the road from my office, and all coffees are R15 if ordered before 9am. See our tall flat whites, the wall mural outside and some literal spilt milk on the steps outside. We didn’t cry over it.

Last week we finally moved into our dream home here in Cape Town, along with the doggies and my parents. It’s a process that we started back in June, so we can’t quite believe it’s real!

Friday, 1 March 2019: Moving day, Bertie’s 9th birthday
Bye bye, Bishops Bend! We’ve loved our four years here in the first house we’ve owned, but the time has come for something different. After everything was packed up, we said our final goodbyes last Friday evening.Hello, Giraffe House! So many things make us happy about our new home, as you’ll see from the pics below and more to come in the next few weeks – two separate houses, one enormous garden for the doggies…More of the pretty corners of our new home.There are beautiful blossoms and trees everywhere you look here, and the doglets love doing laps around the garden. It’s so tropical.Amongst all the unpacking that evening, we even managed to fit in a mini-birthday celebration for Bertie boy.Moving in celebrations! Some of Bertie’s birthday-party snacks, his new giraffe rope-toy, split shooters to celebrate the big move, as well as a beautiful vase of flowers and thoughtful muffin-and-coffee welcome gift from our new neighbours. We feel loved!Bertie receiving his ‘Giraffe House’ birthday present – we’ve had it hidden away since starting the house purchase process. He has pulled out most of the stuffing and now watches TV with it. So sweet!
Saturday, 2 March 2019: Celebratory cocktails and tacos at El Barrio
We were drenched in sweat from unpacking boxes on Saturday afternoon as it was such a hot day, so as soon as we had a gap we hit the beach. It was just what our aching feet needed. Husband said the water was less icy than usual so he had quite a long swim in the sea, too.We also stopped in at El Barrio in Eden on the Bay for a celebration of tacos and cocktails. See our tacos, Husband’s blueberry-filled ‘Mexican hipster’ and my strawberry, lime and mint frozen margarita. Yum!We all had a braai together that evening. Also see Husband testing out my hammock chair.Finally, a tree shady enough to swing from my hammock chair in peace!

We stopped in at Blueberries in Table View Shopping Centre for a quick breakfast. See my banana-caramel pancake and Husband’s hash-brown plate.Beautiful star-shaped buds caught in a fine spider’s web in a hidden corner of our new garden.
Monday, 4 March 2019: Rocomama’s waffles
The doggies watching their Granny’s every move while adjusting to the novelty of living together. Such sweeties.Husband was back at work on Monday but I had one more day to unpack all those boxes, so unpack I did – then went for a treat at Rocomama’s once I was done. See Dad’s waffle sandwich, Mum’s Hey Joe saucy hot dog, and my espresso shake.My half-portion Cookies n Scream waffle was just what the doctor ordered. 🙂

Thursday, 14 February 2019: Valentine’s Day hot dogs and shakes at Rocomama’s
I’d taken a day’s leave on Valentine’s Day, so that I’d be well into the holiday spirit for our weekend away. See my lovely lunchtime treat at Rocomama’s with my parents – that’s a double BCG hot dog (topped with bacon, cheese and guacamole), as well as a Nutella-banana waffle and various cold drinks.
Friday, 15 February 2019: My 35th birthday – Hermanus waffles and dinner in Gansbaai
Happy birthday to me! Imagine balloons and such. We were both obviously on leave so we slept in until after the weekday alarm usually goes off, then decided on a New Cafe breakfast as we needed an early start for the first leg of our road trip up to Hermanus.Lunchtime! After a good few hours on the road, we met my parents at Belgian Waffles, Burgers and Beers in Hermanus. See some of the beers sampled, as well as my Speculaas waffle and ginger-white chocolate cappuccino. Happy happy!Husband and Dad off to dip their toes in the sea at Grotto Bay – it was quite a low tide so they didn’t venture in beyond their ankles.Benguela Lodge in De Kelders was our home base for the weekend. Saturday, 16 February 2019: My cousin Shelley’s wedding at Panorama Farm in Franskraal
T’was a cold, drizzly Saturday morning so we decided to pop in at the wedding venue for a quick recce. See the pretty pruned trees, main castle building and various dogs and horses we befriended.Next stop, we drove up to see where the shark cage-diving happens in Gansbaai. There were so many folk in wet suits! Not us, of course…By then we needed a treat so stopped at Giuseppe’s Pizza in Gansbaai for cocktails – their special is ‘buy any two beers, pay for both’. Lol! See my toffee-nut shake; Dad’s enormous Long Island Ice Tea, with a thick lemon wedge separating the white spirits from the sugarless Cola; Mum’s bloody Mary; and Husband’s orange Sex on the Beach. All were yum!Sights we saw at Panorama Farm in Franskraal, at Shelley and Richard’s wedding.Panorama Farm has a lovely forest ceremony area, which is where we witnessed the vows. See Shelley walking down the aisle with her brother and dad.Aww. Such a special moment, snapped between my cousin Darryl (brother of the bride) and his son, Dylan.Introducing Mr and Mrs Lothian! The joy and love was all around us.Wedding bubbles! See the sweet individual bubble blowers we used at the ceremony, with rose petals, as well as the enormous bubbles we created when it was time for ‘snacks and lawn games’. Also see Dad and Husband doing the same the next morning, at the post-wedding breakfast.Beautiful platters adorned the wedding reception tables.Sunflowers were clearly the theme, adding a sunny touch to the tables, with Shelley’s hair featuring daisies.See the individual cheese, cracker and spread platters that were waiting on the tables, as well as the dessert table, including the cake and cinnamon cookies Shelley baked herself. Sunday, 17 February 2019: Post-wedding breakfast at Panorama Farm
We missed our doglets very much but made friends with Benguela Lodge’s sweet African bush cat, Oscar.After a speedy check-out, we started our Sunday with a brief explore of the walkway down to the deck overlooking the sea at De Kelders. It was just beautiful.Champagne sparkles on the glossy blue sea.Next stop, our third visit at beautiful Panorama Farm, where we all met up for a quick farewell ‘foodtruck’ brekkie, featuring coffee and bacon-egg rolls. Just the thing after all the dancing of the night before.We had worked up quite an appetite from our morning walk, so the bacon-and-egg buns and cups of coffee in the sunshine went down a treat.

Friday, 18 January 2019: McDonald’s with a difference
We stopped in at our nearest McDonald’s after work last Friday and were surprised to see the decor is completely different, with a fully automated order system. Not a yellow arch in sight!And to drink, with my chilli cheese medium McMeal? An iced coffee, further adding to the unexpectedness of the experience.
Saturday, 19 January 2019: Rocomama’s waffles
It was a Bread & Butter breakfast for us on Saturday. See our flat white and mochachino respectively, as well as my single bacon eggs benedict and Husband’s trout omelette.We decided on Rocomama’s for our Saturday afternoon treat. Seen here: My half portion ‘Cookies and Scream’ waffle, Husband’s Franken-smash burger with chilli-cheese fries, and his G-shake with shot of Jack Daniels’ Jack Fire. Yum!The burgers and fries were top-notch as always, and the waffle delicious. This is the half-portion of ‘Cookies and Scream’, which I polished off after my burger and creme brulee shake.
Sunday, 20 January 2019: Greens breakfast, Boardhouse cocktails
See how we started our Sunday: my caramelised pear, pecan and marscapone flapjack stack, Husband’s spinach and mushroom benedict, my moccachino and his flat white.Sunday morning means quality time with the doglets!We used a 2-for-1 Entertainer voucher that afternoon, for cocktails at the Boardhouse. See our cranberry-rose mojo jam jars – one each – and some of the lovely decor. Sadly, we did have work the next day!Bright, sunny decor inside Boardhouse in Table View. We sat inside as it was quite a windy day.Mmm, malva pudding after lupper at Mum’s on Sunday evening.
Wednesday, 23 January 2019: Awarding work at work and sweet evening dogs
I received a certificate of jury participation from the global Epica Awards at work on Wednesday. These are for advertising work, and are judged by journalists in the marketing industry. I judged 531 of the 4020 entries last year! You don’t vote on your own country’s work, of course.
