Wednesday, 4 April 2018: Autumn Risotto Pop-Up Experience at 95 Keerom and Gords’ visit
I’d been invited to review the Autumn Risotto Pop-Up Experience at 95 Keerom on Wednesday afternoon, so of course I accepted the offer. Each bowl was delicious, especially accompanied by Steenberg Wines’ finest.

Gords, one of Husband’s oldest friends from our Joburg days, was in Cape Town on business on Wednesday so we jumped at the chance to see him at Husband’s parents’ house. See various happy moments below – yes, the doggies were there, too.
Husband’s Mum cooked up haggis, chilli con carne, potatoes and various veg in honour of Gords’ visit. See how thrilled Bertie was to greet Gords, also see my Mum with Bassie (my parents popped in for a quick visit, too).

Saturday, 7 April 2018: Coffee-filled breakfast at The Daily
The Daily at Seaside Village in Big Bay had revamped its menu so we went for a quick taste. As it was first thing in the morning, we started with coffee! See various shots of Husband’s ‘con panna’ (espresso topped with cream) and my latte.
To eat we went with old favourites – toasted chicken mayo in white for me, eggs florentine for Husband. See shots of how they were served on the left and after we’d doctored them with sauces on the right.
After a fair deal of weekend admin we decided on an early dinner at The Orient in Eden on the Bay that evening. See various hand rolls, sashimi and maki consumed by Husband, and my cashew chicken dish bottom left.
Sunday, 8 April 2018: Coffee at Reload, breakfast at Tables at Nitida, liquid treats at Pakalolo
We were up earlier than necessary on Sunday so stopped for a fancy coffee treat first thing. The outside seating area at Reload in Parklands is inviting.

As we’d not seen them the day before, we met Husband’s parents at Tables at Nitida for breakfast. It’s such a pretty spot!
Love the mosaic tables at Tables (lol) – also see my Milo shake;, the general ‘bacon-eggs-mushrooms-tomato’ brekkie ordered by Husband’s parents; my brioche French toast with jar of scrumptious caramelised bananas and nuts; and Husband’s Italian-style chorizo-pepper-feta-spring onion open-faced omelette. No wonder their tagline is ‘For the love of food!’
Tables at Nitida always makes us feel welcome. “May all who enter as guests leave as friends.”
After we’d ‘left as friends’, we stopped in at Klein Rosboom for a look around. The entry table is just so pretty. Insert heart-eyes emoji.

Much later that afternoon, after lots of manual labour in the garden, we stopped in at Pakalolo on the beachfront for a liquid treat. It was a frosty Castle Light draught for Husband and raspberry virgin daquiri for me. Delicious!

Ahh. That’s how you spend a Sunday afternoon. Sipping daquiris and staring at sea views.

Friday, 2 March 2018: Coffee meet at Red Sofa Cafe
Did someone say ‘Friday coffee meet at the Red Sofa Cafe’? I was there like a bear, mirrored sunnies and all.
As it was breakfast time, I went for the flapjack stack. Brimming with blueberries, marscapone cheese and honey, it was delicious!
I tried the cheeseburger with sweet potato fries from the Bread Cafe downstairs for Friday lunch, once back in the office.
Saturday, 3 March 2018: Cup & Cake buffet breakfast
Husband was working again on Saturday, so I had a breakfast date my my parents at Cup & Cake at Eden, which has just moved to new premises. See some of the cakes and views here.

We headed to Husband’s parents’ house for dins that eve, once he got home from work. Bassie was very affectionate with her dad.
Bertie ripped open his presents with a little help from his dad, and was delighted to meet his new TV-viewing companion, Seal. Bassie was happy to share his fancy doggy biscuits, too.
Bassie joined me while I had my post-dins coffee outside, just before the sun set. She wasn’t so sure about including Bertie in the photos, LOL.

Sunday, 4 March 2018: Breakfast at Village Place Cafe, Black Panther at GrandWest Casino
We all met at the Village Place Cafe for breakfast first thing on Sunday.

Later that morning, Spec met us at GrandWest Casino as we’d booked tickets to watch the latest Marvel movie, Black Panther. All had a fun time, as you can see 😉

Wednesday, 21 to Friday, 23 February 2018: Design Indaba at the Artscape
You know you’re in for a treat when you arrive at the Design Indaba Festival and feel a sense of wonder before you even enter the Artscape. This year, we were encouraged to ’embrace the unknown’. Click here for a reminder of the 2017 version.
These colourful rhinos also brightened up the cold concrete, while raising awareness for their cause.
Decor inside the Artscape was just as appealing. See various signs and posters.

Considering all the running around we all did, it’s amazing that we managed to stop with Design Indaba editor-in-chief Neo Maditla for a quick snap. You may recall my interview with her late last year. If not, click here for a reminder.
I loved exploring the emerging creatives’ displays in the tea breaks, too. And that outdoor swing-relax area was amazing.
I finally got the chance to swing my troubles away on the final morning of Design Indaba. Such fun!

Saturday, 24 February 2018: News Cafe breakfast, work, Moyo dins
We both had a busy work day ahead of us on Saturday, so stopped off at News Cafe on Marine Circle to start the day the right way – with the earlybird English breakfast special – and cappuccinos, of course.
All that for R35, if you order before 10am. It’s delicious!
Once we were both done with work for the day (tragic to say that for a Saturday, where you both worked all week, too), we stopped in at Moyo at Eden on the Bay in Big Bay for an early dins. See Husband’s curried mussel starter, my hazelnut latte, and the pulled-lamb linguine starter we shared.

We had Sunday morning breakfast at Primi on Marine Circle. See my eggs benedict, the large cappuccinos (actually served in latte glasses/mugs) and Husband’s Primi power stack.
We stopped in at Saint’s at Eden on the Bay for our Sunday afternoon treat. See my Insomniac shake (chocolate, espresso, Amarula and Kahlua) and Husband’s Painkiller cocktail (Bacardi, Malibu, orange juice, pineapple juice, coconut, nutmeg).

Wednesday, 28 February 2018: Team lunch at Hail Pizza
Design Indaba done and dusted, we had our first team lunch of the year on Wednesday afternoon, at Hail Pizza on Bree Street. Their R50 midweek lunch meal special is amazing – I had the rooibos-lemon-mint ice tea and large margherita pizza, and brought home more than half of it for dins. All that for R50!
And surprise! We invited former team members Rod and Bev (both bottom left) to join us. Was a lovely afternoon!

Friday, 20 October 2017: Galliova Awards at Landtscap, Stellenbosch
Last Friday, I covered the 2017 Galliova Awards. I started my day in the office, then caught a shuttle from the CTICC to Landtscap wine farm in Stellenbosch, and rubbed shoulders with celeb chef Zola Nene and this year’s ‘broiler champion’ for chicken-writing, Abigail Donelly.
Obviously the food for an event celebrating ‘food writers’ has to be exceptional. Landtscap outdid our expectations – click here for a full list of all the ‘chicken and egg’ themed food we ate.

Saturday, 21 October 2017: Musselling and braai at our house
The three faces of Bassie when I had my first coffee of the weekend – “Mmm, that smells nice Mom, what is it? Oh it’s coffee. OK then, as you were.” What a cutie!
The entire Andrews family was going musselling on Saturday morning, an event that had been planned for months, with the resulting ‘catch’ to be eaten as starters at the braai at our house later that afternoon. Spec had driven over from Fish Hoek the night before to spend the weekend with us, so we all met up at Doodles on the beachfront for their weekend buffet breakfast.
A-musselling we will go! Tummies lined, we headed up the beach to Husband’s favourite spot for musselling, permits in hand.

As we were in need of the extra man power to complete the task, we took advantage of having Spec in the house to help replace the old helicopter fish tank centrepiece with this shipwreck. Also topped up the gravel and gave it a good grit vaccuum.
The doggies were on their sweetest behaviour during the braai later that afternoon.
Sunday, 22 October 2017: News Cafe brekkie, Lion’s Head hike
We knew we needed a big breakfast to sustain us on the hike ahead, so we joined my parents for breakfast at News Cafe in Marine Circle as you can’t beat the value of their R35 early bird English breakfast special.
We knew the task ahead of us so took it slow, with lots of breaks to admire the view along the way.
The best thing about the Lion’s Head hike is that it’s not a straight, endless line up to the top (ahem, looking at you Platteklip and Skeleton gorges!) Instead you wind around the peak a few times so there’s a new view every few metres.

Peak summitted, we began our slow climb down with a detour along the way. Success! Wally’s Cave isn’t easy to find if you’re coming at it from the top, as we were. We took a few wrong turns but eventually reached our destination. That’s Lion’s Head done and dusted in full.
We were in desperate need of a treat after that, so headed off to Beerhouse on Long Street. The Andrews brothers never say no to a beer, and as for me, well…
This is what I came for – the ‘beer float’ – listed on their dessert menu as it’s a mug of milk stout topped with salted caramel and bourbon ice cream, with honeycomb crumbs on a cloud of whipped cream above that, ribbons of dulce de leche and chocolate ganache dripping down the sides and cherry on top. Also served with a side of grilled marshmallow skewers.

Monday, 23 October 2017: Gourmet Guide launch at The Stack
I was invited to the launch of the second edition of the JHP Gourmet Guide on Monday morning, at The Stack in Gardens. It was a foodie event packed with delicious treats, tiger ceramics and sunny views.
The Stack is all animal-print carpets, wooden artwork and bright colours. I like.
Coffee and a scone? Don’t mind if I do!
Tuesday, 24 October 2017: Working lunch at Montebello
I had the opportunity to interview a team of very bright ‘design thinkers’ on Tuesday afternoon. Their office is in the Montebello Design Centre in Newlands so that’s where we met, with a wonderful lunch at The Gardener’s Cottage on the same grounds. See my cappuccino and chicken burger topped with cheese and pineapple-mayo. So yum, and such speedy service!

I spent my Wednesday covering the Adams & Adams crammer day on intellectual property issues at the 15 on Orange. Very interesting topics I’ll write about soon, and so many snacks to keep us alert!

Monday, 11 September 2017: Fly SAA from Cape Town to JHB
First stop, the airport. Having packed our bags and checked we had everything we needed – I left Husband’s passport in the scanner for our last overseas trip, and will never do that again! Check-in was easy so we had breakfast at Primi overlooking the flight deck. And then we were off!
By the time we reached our first hotel of the trip – the City Lodge at Johannesburg’s main airport it was a sunny, summery afternoon. We dropped off our bags in our room and decamped to the pool area for a while. Just blissful!
The moment we found out we’d need to spend the night in Joburg we decided we would have a special dinner at Lucio’s in Blackheath – they make gnocchi piccante, which is a bolognaise sauce with cream, brandy, chillies and lime. Too delicious for words. We also invited Gords as it was close to his birthday and we’d not seen him in ages. It was a lovely evening.
Tuesday, 12 to Tuesday, 19 September: Week at Azanzi Beach Hotel, Zanzibar
We needed to be at the airport at 5am for the Zanzibar flight so checked out of our hotel around 4:30am then trundled across the walkway into the main airport building. Check-in was another breeze, so we were pleased to find the Mugg & Bean open and ready to serve coffee, cookies and proper breakfast things for Husband. Then we were off again – up, up and away!
Having made sense of the chaos of the Zanzibar airport – meaning we found the correct forms, filled them in, made our way through passport control, located our bags, found our travel guide, paid 1$ USD to use the bathroom – we were ready to survive the roads to our resort in Matemwe on the island’s north-east coast, about 45 minutes from the airport. We saw many sights on the way, but mostly lush greenery as we passed the various spice farms and bright bunches of fruit and clothing for sale in the small towns we passed. Transport is very expensive in Zanzibar, so we didn’t leave the resort much.
Zanzibar is palm tree central. There are leafy trees everywhere you look.
Our resort was sunny, with thatched rooves nestled between palm trees – and you could walk right through, on to the beach.
The jambo juice cocktail, presented with a cold facecloth once you’ve checked into Azanzi, was about the most delicious thing I’ve ever tasted. It’s a mix of coconut milk, pineapple juice and strawberry juice. Husband enjoyed the local Safari beers, I downed bottles of Stoney tangawizi (ginger beer) and Husband enjoyed the local wines with dinner.
The rooms are bright and airy, cleaned each morning and sprayed and ‘netted’ each evening to ensure a bug-free stay. Our suite was upstairs so we had a balcony with view of the bright bouganvilleas and palm trees to gaze at.
The mosquito-netted beds are very pretty and make you feel relaxed and peaceful and protected (though you still need to take your full course of malaria pills just in case. We are almost done with ours).
Some of the pretty bouganvillea blooms. There were pinks, oranges and reds, which were quite spectacular from the balcony.
The pool is gorgeous, partially shaded as it flows beneath the upstairs dining area. We spent lots of time wading in these waters.

Wake early to catch the sunrise
Matemwe beach is an excellent spot from which to catch the sunrise. We climbed up into the massage hut on the beach for these, so very different to the sunset shots below.
Sip chilled, fruity drinks at (and in) the pool
It’s always a good time for a drink in Zanzibar. Local soft drinks, beers, wines and more are part of the all-inclusive package and the Fanta Orange tasted just delicious there.
Cocktails are not included in the package, but we couldn’t resist a pina colada IN the pool! 🙂
I was thrilled to find that the jambo juice I’d loved so much on our arrival is also one of the cocktails on the bar menu.
Be active – play or watch sports – or rest in a hammock
When it was just too hot and windy to sit outside, we stepped indoors to play a few games of pool. Oh how we laughed and laughed at my ‘excellent’ skills 😉
We happened to have our SA shirts with us, so tuned into the rugby match against NZ. Some say this was not a wise move. This is us sipping Colas in the resort lounge.
Azanzi Beach Hotel is the ultimate spot for relaxation, with hammocks and comfy seats everywhere you look. Take a few novels and magazines with you, or just let your eyes switch into screensaver mode for a while and feel your worries slip away.
Take a sunset cruise at Nungwi
This was one of the highlights of our holiday. We were transported in an air-conditioned vehicle to Nungwi on the island’s north coast, the best spot to catch the sunset. After Husband had a quick dip in the sea we set off towards the horizon, with more drinks and fresh fruit midway. We were at sea from 4pm to just after 6pm.
It’s clear to see why Nungwi is so popular with tourists – calm, clear blue water, lots of resorts to choose from and the best view of the sunset.

Husband spent some time in the water, of course, saying ‘hi’ to starfish and the like, and the sunset was truly spectacular.

Snorkelling, beach walks and sunning ourselves
Or you could take a stroll along the beach in Matemwe – everyone will greet you, ask for your name and where you’re from. There’s lots to see as most of the fishing takes place right before of your eyes.
We spent the bulk of our time in, on or gazing at the sea. It was an unbelievable shade and temperature, I can’t describe how warm and calm it is!
Make sure you’re both facing the right direction when you take your beach photos or you may end up with a sequence like this. Lol.

Morning of snorkelling under the sun over with, it was time for a BBQ lunch at nearby Muyuni beach. We ate fresh chicken and tuna steaks with tiramisu for dessert, swam in the warm sea and napped in hammocks. That’s what being on holiday’s all about. That’s also the only meal we had away from our resort.
Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner at Azanzi Beach Hotel
Breakfast! The best meal of the day, or the most important, say some. At Azanzi it was usually a buffet offering with eggs as you like them, crispy bacon and other assorted delights – chocolatey pastries, honeyed croissants, chicken or pork sausages, curry, noodles, French toast, pancakes, cheeses and cold meats, cereals with yoghurt and fresh fruit, juices and coffees… sure to get your day off to the right start!
We had many a good cup of coffee at Azanzi. See the breakfast pot, which usually provided three full cups, as well as coffee from our balcony and below, over the pool.
Lunch! The food at Azanzi Beach is really delicious and if you’ve taken the all-inclusive/full board offering, it’s all covered before you get there. We looked forward to our three meals a day and often had more than one course at each. This is lunch on the beach – a chicken curry for Husband and a bacon-banana toasted panini for me.
Just a handful of the food pics I took when we were at Azanzi Beach Hotel. We ate everything from pork loins to prawn skewers, butternut-orange soup and octopus pili pili to green bananas in coconut sauce. All lip-smackingly good.
There’s a weekly special beach BBQ/braai dinner buffet – such a treat! Tables are set up on the beach, with many salad type starters, a chef ready to toss potatoes, chicken, tuna, calamari, prawns and crayfish on the grill and sides of delicious oxtail soup and sweet-and-sour brinjals. For dessert, a choice of white chocolate tart, creme caramel and fruit salad left everybody smiling and singing along to the live music.
There was lots of wildlife to befriend, too. See the birdies that joined us at breakfast, Zanzikat or Chewie, who often visited our room, and another kitty that was sitting with a monkey on the beach at Nungwi. We also saw little goats and skinny cows.
Wash, rinse, repeat the above, and following a bumpy ride back to the airport, we were finally on our way home a full week after the journey began. Until next time!

being Marvin just last week) as a colleague had taken ill and I had a number of late-night award shows to track and work on.

Thursday, 4 May and Friday, 5 May 2017: Dress-up days
Yes, I’m cheesy like that – if it’s a certain themed day and I have a relevant item of clothing, I’ll wear it. So last Thursday, Husband and I both wore Star Wars gear (#Maythefourthbewithyou) and on Friday I donned a Cinco de Mayo top. If only I could find an SA store that makes sugar cookies like this, my snacks would match…

Saturday, 6 May: Reviewing Constantia Glen’s soups
We took our Saturday morning breakfast at the Sunningdale Village Place Cafe. Note my pretty cappuccino with spoonful of heart biscuits, Husband’s eggs benedict with bacon and my banana-granola-yoghurt-berry breakfast pot. All recommended if you’re ever in the area.
We had a bit of time on our hands thereafter so Husband surprised me by stopping in at the windmill – you know the one, just to the left of the prettiest leafy main road in Cape Town, De Waal Drive AKA the M3? Well, it turns out it’s called Mostert’s Mill and is the only working windmill in the country (s’True.) You can buy a family ticket that grants you access for a year. You can then have a guided tour inside, see flour being milled by the wind power and even taste a bite of bread made with that milled flour. Stop in if you’ve not yet been, for sure.

Doesn’t this pic just scream ‘perfect Winter meal’? We couldn’t decide on an individual flavour of soup so opted for the trio sampler instead, and were so glad we did. In case you can’t tell, that’s the beefy traditional Austrian goulash on the left, then a dark-brown French onion soup topped with slice of gruyere croute, and one of the best butternut soups ever.
As you can see, we were also treated to the cheese and charcuterie platter. Teehee, I love how Husband ‘drank in the meal’ not just with his eyes and mouth but also with his nose.
Snaps of some of my favourite flavours from our lunch – the creamy honey-roasted butternut-sage soup topped with coconut-milk swirl top left, a fresh caper berry top right, forkful of baguette topped with soft white cheese and Constantia Glen’s own delicate rosé grape jelly and the truly delicious cappuccino I chose to end the meal with. t’Was so good we told our waiter to compliment the barista.
I mentioned the ‘selfie-worthy’ bathrooms in my review, so of course I took a few snaps. Just look at that pretty honeycomb-mosaicked floor and the beautiful birdied wallpaper.
Later that evening we had the first official Andrews family braai at our house ( here’s a reminder of the first version at Husband’s parents’ new house) – though I kept dashing back to the laptop for work. We still had a fun evening, as you can see, mainly from the glee on the brothers’ faces.
Sunday, 7 May 2017: Europa breakfast and Sunningdale sunset
We stopped off at Europa in Canal Walk – on the Pick n Pay end – for a breakfast bite on Sunday. Note my flat white, Husband’s eggs ben-on-bagel and my strawberry-topped tiramisu French Toast. Delicious but a tad expensive.
Streaky clouds like this guarantee a stunning sunset. Especially on a Sunday evening.

Saturday, 25 March 2017: Village Place breakfast, Enchanted dinner
You simply can’t start the weekend without a cappuccino if your name rhymes with ‘Shmee Shmandrews’. Ahem. As you know, the toffee-flavoured version at our local Village Place Cafe got my ‘ best of 2016‘ cappuccino title last year, and it still hits the spot as we near April 2017.
Husband’s parents joined us so it was a table for four, please. That’s Mother-in-law’s ‘bird in a nest’ top left, Father-in-law’s Village breakfast bottom left, Husband’s sweetcorn fritters topped with poached egg and bacon top right and my S’mores waffle bottom right. SO YUM.
My next shot of java was imbibed at the house of my parents-in-law, where we further assisted in unpacking their boxes (you saw the start of this last week here). But there’s still quite a way to go…
Later that evening we dined at Enchanted Pizza in Parklands. I had the Enchanted shake (peanut butter, chocolate syrup and toasted peanuts, so good). Husband had the seafood-y Enchanted pasta, and I went with their recommendation of the butter chicken pizza. So good but really filling, we finished it off during the week.
Sunday, 26 March 2017: Melkbos breakfast, peppermint fridge tart
It’s not just a Saturday that deserves a good cappuccino start to the day, but everyday. This is the delightful version I swigged at Ritzi’s in Melkbos on Sunday morning.
Coffee downed, we were ready for food. Husband had the baked eggs ‘cocotte’ topped with bacon, while I had a ‘build your own’ breakfast – sourdough bread, cream cheese and lots of bacon bits. Just what I wanted!
Mum had created this SA favourite for dessert after lupper that evening – peppermint fridge tart! For the first time in about 20 years! I’ll admit I had more than one bowlful.
Monday, 27 March 2017: Early morning bus views
I’ve been leaving home earlier and earlier lately to get to work – so much so that I’m snapping more sun rises than the sunsets I used to. Sob. This was the view of Flamingo Vlei from the bus at around 6am on Monday morning.
Tuesday, 28 March 2017: Day off in Langebaan
I knew Husband would be off work this week so took the day off on Tuesday so we could join my parents on a day trip to the Langebaan side of the Cape. You should know one doesn’t just set off on a roadtrip without a coffee stop along the way. That would be very dangerous indeed. Here we are at the Vyge Vallei padstal last visited with brother Spec in December with a coffee each (Husband’s Cola is just in shot too as that’s his caffeine of choice).
We were only 55km from Langebaan by then so it’s a good place to stop for a refill. All the animals gret Husband, too. Some grinned, some licked, some grunted. Teehee.
The birdies were also very interested in Husband.
Sticking with the ‘birdie’ theme, on the Mykonos side of Langebaan I met this here gull statue outside the Boerekombuis Restaurant. He’s rather large.
Dad was rather amused at this sign!
The menfolk dipped their toes in the icy Mykonos sea. Us lady folk didn’t.
We lunched at Marc’s Beach Bar – the drinks were all delicious, from Bloody Mary to draught beer and Sol and pina colada and coffee shake. The food was all good, too – chicken schnitzel for mum, unphotographed toasted for Dad and mussel-haddock chowder for Husband, with my cheese burger, chips and fries on the bottom right.

Wednesday, 29 March 2017: Husband and doggies help unpack
I was back at work on Wednesday but Husband was still off so he and the doggies went to help with more unpacking at his parents’ house. You can just see how proud Bertie is to be ‘helping’.
