This past week took an age to get through. Perhaps because we’re finally in February and January’s always the longest month, what with transitioning back into ‘work mode’ after the end-of-year break.
Here’s what we’ve been up to since my last update…

Saturday, 27 January 2018: Sweet treats at Sweet Loaf, brotherly dins at Catch22
We started our weekend at Wimpy in Bayside as we had a few weekend admin chores to do while there. And surprise, soon after we ordered my parents also ended up there for breakfast! I enjoyed my regular Wimpy coffee and toasted cheese on a stick. Husband had the streaky bacon breakfast with extra cheesegriller (as did Dad), while Mum went for the avo-toast. A good start to the day!
We also did some motorbike-gear pricing at Sable Square and stopped at Sweet Loaf for a quick treat – everything sells for R11, whether you want a cappuccino, can of Cola, mini-cake load or palm-size pie.
Aww! Little Miss Bassie was such a happy girl when we popped in at her grandparents’ house that evening for some tech assistance.
Bertie was also eager to share his affection with his dad. Big licks!
Spec was spending the night with us so after a quick unpack at our house we headed off to Catch22 for dins. See Husband enjoying his glass of red top-left, my gingerbread latte top-right, Spec with his Amstel bottom-left, and Husband and me in front of the tropical paradise painting outside bottom-right. T’was so bright, we needed to wear sunnies.
And the food? Oh boy was it good! Spec went for the linefish with calamari special. All delicious!
Later that evening we walked down the beach to see the kite-surfing competition in action – it was suitably windy!
Sunday, 28 January 2018: Husband’s family birthday lunch at Bossa
The little ones were happy to pose with me on the couch as my coffee was in a doggy-patterned mug so they felt right at home. As they should, as they were at home. Teehee.
For the first time in many years, we all live in the same city so could do a combined birthday lunch for Husband. See the eisbein with roast veg with parents shared top-left, the pizza me and father-in-law ate top-right, dad’s strong flat white bottom-left (and he had a Black Label draught before that, so his placemat was accurate), with a full family shot bottom right.
Once we’d had time to digest lunch, we stopped off at Husband’s favourite sea-swimming hole for his weekly dunk.
We stopped in at Table Bay Mall for a spot of birthday shopping and a treat in the form of Milky Lane ice creams, mmm! Husband’s is plain vanilla with caramel topping and assorted syrups, mine is the berry-meringue whizzer.
Monday, 29 January 2018: Husband’s 38th birthday
Here’s the first batch of ‘kisses with the birthday hat’ photos. The doggies were keen to join in but seemed shy once we started taking the pics.
These are our attempts while sitting on the couch. If i was licking Bertie’s head in the bottom-left pic (I’m not, I’m blowing Husband a kiss but Bertie angled himself in such a way that it looks like Bass is licking my hand, I’m licking Bertie’s head and he’s licking his dad’s chin.) Crying with laughter!
Tuesday, 30 January 2018: Office donuts and owlie mugs
When clients cancel Tuesday meetings and send through apology donuts (from Dunking Donuts, else they’d be ‘doughnuts’), we share. Also, meet my new hipster owl office mug – disinterested deer has bitten the dust.
T’was also the day I did a video interview in the Barclays Rise space in the Woodstock Exchange. I’ll share the link to that interview next week. For now, see the interesting surrounds.
Wednesday, 31 January 2018: Waffles on a stick at the Big Bay Summer Market
It’s been a while since the last ‘I love Big Bay’ food and craft market, usually held at the Big Bay Lifesaving Club at Eden on the Bay on the last Wednesday of every month. It was a very windy day so we didn’t stay very long.

Look at the choices! All were fresh and chocolate-y but I went for the ‘Astronaut’, as it was covered in mini-Astros and looked like an edible Christmas tree. Yum.
Thursday, 1 February 2018: #NespressoOnIce pop-up shop at work
The NespressoOnIce truck is conducting a road trip across the country and stopped in at our office on Thursday afternoon. We were thrilled to try a few of the iced coffee options as it was a very hot day.

Friday, 19 January 2018: Work milkshakes at Red Sofa Cafe
I had a business meet Vredehoek side on Friday. If you’ve never been to Red Sofa Cafe, you’ll know you’re at the right place not because of a red sofa (I didn’t see one) – but rather by the ‘but first coffee’ sign outside and the cheery red interior jam-packed with hipsters typing away at their keyboards. Also, see two of the sunset scenes we snapped that evening.

Saturday, 20 January 2018: Day out exploring Muizenberg and Fish Hoek
Tiger’s Milk in Muizenberg was our first stop of the weekend. We’ll need to go back later in the day to try some of the other tempting things they serve – burgers, pizzas, nachos and cocktails. Mmm!
I went for the flapjacks with twirls of bacon and cooked banana, with a cappuccino to drink. Husband had the Ranchero breakfast pan and a Coke Light (not pictured).

Beautiful yet windy day in Muizenberg. Things quickly turned cloudy and grey.
We stopped in at the lovely Hotel Glencairn for a quick treat on our way towards the braai. I loved the ‘Ubuntu’ wall and pretty purple patterned cushion inside.
We sat inside as the deck looked lovely but too windy. See the ‘Chappies wrapper’-print menu, Husband’s Castle draught beer and the peanut butter carmel-fudge gourmet shake I downed.
You can see just how much the weather had changed here – it was still warm but with an icy wind, very odd weather conditions.
Braai food included potato salad, green salad without lettuce, a variety of meats on the grill, garlic bread and a s’mores-type braai pudding. We ate and we ate!
Sunday, 21 January 2018: Mugg n Bean breakfast, dips in the chilly sea
We Sunday breakfasted at Mugg n Bean in the Table Bay Mall on Sunday morning. See my frozen mocha and choc-chip flapjacks, as well as Husband’s guava juice and bacon-bean hash benedict. Far too much food all round, we both ended up with takeaway boxes.

It was beach weather again that day, so after a bit of weekend admin we made our way to Kleinbaai. The water was very chilly but that never stops Husband from diving in, as you can see bottom left.

Thursday, 25 January 2018: Thursday cupcake, final Red & Yellow #digitalmarketingLIVE lecture and a healthy Bassie
It was a lovely surprise to find a freshly baked mini chocolate cupcake on my desk.
T’was the very last #digitalmarketingLIVE lesson at Red & Yellow on Thursday afternoon. Will miss my weekly learning sessions there!
Aww. Little Miss Bassie got a clean bill of health following her six-month check-up and was happy to have a snuggle that evening.

Friday, 29 December 2017: Day of rest
Friday was a day of rest, with this breakfast at Mugg n Bean in Table Bay Mall one of our only excursions. See Husband’s poached eggs on potato-bean hash brown, with my avo and poached egg toast and iced mocha. Highly recommended!
Saturday, 30 December 2017: Hot chocolate sampling tray at The Daily, sunset at the beach
We started our weekend as such: I went for the ‘hot chocolate tasting tray’ – white, dark and rooibos – with cinnamon-sugar pancakes while Husband had the eggs florentine and cappuccino at The Daily in Seaside Village.
We took advantage of the sunny weather later that day, with Husband having a dip in the sea at Castle Rock.
T’was an ‘ice cream on the beach’ day, so that’s just what I had for my afternoon treat. Was lovely, with ice cream all the way to the tip of the cone!
The weekly braai took place at Husband’s parents’ house later that afternoon, with Spec coming home with us and staying until New Year’s Day. Various snaps from the braai…

Sunday, 31 December 2017: New Year’s Eve Webered turkey
We opted for Foodlover’s Market for our final breakfast of 2017. See our cappuccinos, my bacon-feta-avo tramezzini with chips, and the boys’ halloumi stack breakfasts.
We stopped in at the Beach Tavern in Woodbridge Island for a brief beach visit and our final afternoon treat of the year. See my pina colada shake on the left.
There was gentle rain when Husband Webered ANOTHER turkey for New Year’s Eve, complete with confit potatoes and bright green peas.
Monday, 1 January 2018: Fry-up and prawn braai
We learned last year that almost everything is closed on New Year’s Day, so we planned ahead and stocked up on breakfast essentials ahead of the big day. Once we’d all rolled out of bed, Husband cooked a fry-up for all.
Spec left for his home after breakfast, and we got ready to put the Weber to use again with prawn skewers and peri-peri chicken. See mum and dad creating the prawn-and-peppers sosaties and the final outcome.
Husband did the honours of popping the New Year’s Day bubbly.
The hot doggies spent lots of time resting under the cool fans this week.
Tuesday, 2 January 2018: Melkbos morning, Woodbridge walk
Melkbosstrand beach was crowded as a result of the ‘beach weather’ day on Tweede Nuwe Jaar.
Castella Amare on the beachfront was one of few places open pre-noon on Tuesday, so that’s where we breakfasted. See our cocoa-topped cappuccinos, Husband’s eggs royale (salmon eggs ben) and my flapjacks with bacon and banana.

We prefer starting at Woodbridge Island side, walking along the tree-lined road to Lagoon Beach, where we cross the stream and walk back to the Milnerton lighthouse along the beachfront. Walkies done, we stop for a treat. See Husband’s draught and the Dragon Fiery Apple I chose. They were frosty and delicious.
Wednesday, 3 January 2018: Day in Langebaan
We stopped off at the Vygevallei farm stall for breakfast, and ate at ‘Route 27 Roosterkoek’, which only served roosterbroodjies (coal-fired sarmies).
Of course I had a coffee to start (two tea bags of coffee in the pot = two tin cups full). Also see our ‘roosterkoeks’. Mine was jam and cheese, Husband had egg and cheese topped with hot sauce.
We met up with Husband’s parents at Shark Bay for a swim in the sea mid-morning. It was chilly but so refreshing!
Our destination for the afternoon – Strandloper! It offers a 10-course fishy feast, and if you’re a non-fish eater like me there’s still lots to fill that belly…

We also ate… farm bread with three different types of konfyt (jam) – tomato, pineapple and fig. Mussels served two ways. Haarders. Koeksister twists with moerkoffie.
Thursday, 4 January 2018: News Cafe breakfast, Eden on the Bay walk, Rocomama’s treats
We woke up early enough for the early bird breakfast at News Cafe on Thursday morning. See our cappuccinos, Husband’s avo and chourizo eggs benedict and my early bird English breakfast. Very filling!
We worked off a bit of that breakfast with a brisk beach walk from Eden on the Bay to Kleinbaai and back – stopping at the yellow Nat Geo frame for a few snaps, of course.
On Thursday afternoon we went to the Durbanville branch of Rocomama’s with my parents. See dad’s burger and my chili con carne-topped fries.
This is what we came for – chocolate-syruped shakes with a tot of Jack Daniels served in skull-shaped glasses, and I tried the tiramisu version of their twisted cheesecake. So good!
That’s all, folks. It’s back to work for us next week so we’ll be making the most of our sunshine hours together this weekend! 🙂

Thursday, 7 December 2017: Digital marketing presentation victory at Red & Yellow
Last week’s #digitalmarketingLIVE session at Red & Yellow was an interactive one, so we split into teams for quick ‘student activation’ planning then a presentation in front of the others, and my clever team won!
Friday, 8 December 2017: End-of-year function at Grande Kloof Boutique Hotel
The day started with a media drop from Cadbury’s at our office – a box of Heroes, which are miniatures of the brand’s favourites. Looks at the precious little Top Deck and Flake I nibbled on!
We left the office once the morning’s work was done and travelled to our venue for the afternoon – the Grande Kloof Boutique Hotel in Sea Point. There was a clear sparkly pool just asking to dip your feet in and even a heated jacuzzi (with glass of chilled Amarula on the side) bubbling away…
We started off by soaking up a bit of sun.
This positive sign gret us once we ventured indoors to eat.
Desk mates! We were very excited to get started with the food and this year’s Bad Santa game.
The food was served buffet style with starters of quiche, cheese and crackers and beef strips; meaty mains and brownies with ice cream for dessert. Very Christmassy!
I tried to get the doggies in the Christmas spirit that evening by dangling Christmas baubles while singing Christmas songs. Bertie looks mildly amused. Bassie, not so much.
Saturday, 9 December 2017: Blouberg Cafe breakfast, Catch22 dins
We noticed Petit Fours near Kleinbaai was sporting a new name and nautical navy theme so popped in first thing on Saturday. Now called the Blouberg Cafe, the food is much the same as what we’d come to expect from Petit Fours. Husband had the salmon eggs benedict, I had the mini apple caramel upside-down cake with the cutest baby apple.

Husband bought me a cappuccino to boost my spirits while browsing the store. I offered some to Wonder Woman but she didn’t want any.
We had dins at Catch22 overlooking the beachfront that night. See Husband’s vanilla shake and healthy grilled linefish with calamari and veggies, as well as my passionfruit-lemonade and the chicken burger topped with halloumi, avo and pepperdews, with huge onion rings and side basket of chips. Yummy.
Bertie was a sleepy sweetheart on the couch that evening.
Sunday, 10 December 2017: Baconville breakfast, BMW abseiling and Sunday braai
We had a bacon craving so breakfasted at Baconville in Willowbridge Centre, Tygervalley side on Sunday morning. See Husband’s flat white and Breakfast Club with large mushroom, as well as my chocolate latte and French toast-BLT.
We noticed BMW had set up a special section to showcase X3. Some of the fun with the cars – see the rollercoaster-like obstacle course we started off with, and Husband steering the car along normal roads as part of the usual test drive bottom right.
There were also various activities for the adventurous to participate in. See the wall Husband abseiled down, as well as his backwards flip on the bungee trampoline. Brave, he is!
My parents came to our house for lupper for a change, so we opted for a braai. See some of the delicious foodies.
We also baked a rainbow cake – each layer needed to bake in a separate cake pan, with a different colour of icing between. Was delicious!
Bassie looked younger than her ten years.
Bertie had snuggles with his Granny later that afternoon.
Wednesday, 13 December 2017: Much-needed rainy day in Cape Town
Wednesday was cold, windy and drizzly. See the overcast sky when I left the office for the day.

Friday, 1 December 2017: Adele Searll 100 Club Christmas lunch at the Table Bay Hotel
A nut-crackingly good welcome to the Table Bay Hotel.
The decorations in and around the Table Bay Hotel got me into Christmas mode, fast. See the bright purply baubles everywhere.

I was invited as Pam Westaway’s guest and enjoyed the Cathy Specific entertainment – that’s ‘her’ top left. Yes, I’m standing in the picture. On my tippy toes.
Proper Christmas lunch – we shared platters of endive salad with walnuts, then each had a plate of turkey with pumpkin and cranberries and carrots, and ended with slices of pumpkin pie with maple-pecan ice cream and mince pies with coffee. Simply scrumptious!
Saturday, 2 December 2017: Ons Huisie breakfast, Wimpy shakes and home braai
We decided on breakfast at Ons Huisie on Saturday morning. See Husband’s curried mince on toast topped with eggs and my berries-and-cream French toast.

Sunday, 3 December 2017: Mugg & Bean brekkie and Justice League at Bayside, beach visit
We were up early on Sunday for breakfast and to watch Justice League at Bayside. Our Mugg & Bean brekkie included banoffee-chocolate French toast for me and the standard eggs-toast-bacon option for the brothers, with cappuccino all round.

We did some Christmas shopping at the Table Bay Mall on Sunday afternoon. The decorations are lovely and bright!
We stopped at Dolphin Beach later that afternoon for a stroll and jump along the icing-sugar sand and Husband had a quick dunk in the sea.
Tuesday, 5 December 2017: Carrot cake and milk tart in the office
We had cake in the office on Tuesday to celebrate Cari’s birthday over the weekend. Slices were thin so we could sample both, carrot cake and milk tart. They were amazing.

Here it is in all its glory. I’d been gifted with wooden numbers to mosaic and add to the front of our house once we moved in three years ago. We waited until the wall was up and freshly painted, then waited for me to decide on a colour scheme I liked, then estimated how much grouting and mosaic and trim I’d need and finally completed the job over my recent staycation. Sparkly!

Thursday, 9 November 2017: Futures Cape Town and Digital Marketing LIVE at Red & Yellow
Last Thursday was a very busy one for me. I started off in the office, then spent the first bit of the afternoon at the Inner City Ideas Cartel (ICIC), where I covered a bit of the WGSN Futures Cape Town session. Click here if you want to read my coverage on Biz.
Talk over, I Ubered to Red & Yellow School in Salt River. The digital marketing LIVE lessons are streamed over the internet if you can’t be on campus on time – 15:30 to 17:30 on Thursdays. Snacks and study aids at the ready!
Each week, a different digital marketing lecturer shares words of wisdom with us. Up first was Rob Stokes, who started Quirk agency (now Mirum). You can just see the back of my head on the left.
Saturday, 11 November 2017: Village Place breakfast and The World According to Bertie
“I moustache you a question,” teehee. Husband ordered a large cappuccino at the Village Place Cafe on Saturday morning, so his accompanying biscuit was suitably supersized, too.
See my regular size cappuccino and biscuit on the left, banting flapjacks topped with yoghurt and berries on the right, and Husband’s mince on toast topped with eggs in the middle.
We helped Husband’s dad get around the new Table Bay Mall in a wheelchair we lent from the mall security later that morning.
I noticed the cappuccino-donut combo special while we were doing groceries at Checkers later that afternoon and had to give it a try. What I got didn’t look quite like what was in the poster (see difference in pics) but it was still delicious and very good value for money.
We opted against the usual braai as Husband’s dad was limited in his movement, so started with veggie soup, followed by a shared peri-chicken gatsby and chocolate mousse tubs for dessert. Bassie and Bertie got to lick the tubs once we were done with them, as you can see.
Husband and his dad went for walkies down the street later that afternoon. Bertie watched.

Sunday, 12 November 2017: Chocolate-pecan pie and pink clouds
We Sunday-breakfasted at Greens in Plattekloof Village. You can just see us in Husband’s snap of the interior of the restaurant, reflected in the mirror.
To eat: Husband’s mushroom-spinach eggs benedict on the left, my toasted salami, mozzarella and olives on the right.
We had ordered a slice of chocolate-pecan pie to take home from Greens, and I heated it and ate with cream for my early-afternoon treat.

Monday, 13 November 2017: Office birthday cake and evening doggie selfies
Monday was an office birthday cake day as it had been Cheryl’s birthday over the weekend. It looks like I took severely tiny slices of milk tart and carrot cake here!

Wednesday, 22 November 2017: MyUptopia yoga and food review
On Wednesday afternoon, My colleague Shan and I reviewed MyUtopia near the Waterfront’s Express Bikram yoga class followed by a late lunch at the in-studio Nourish Cafe. My full wordy review will be on Biz soon, but you can get an idea of the experience here. See the foresty heated room you stretch and sweat in, and two of the yummy smoothies…
There’s fruit-flavoured water and the bathrooms are stocked with everything you may need – shampoo and body wash in the shower, cotton balls and deodorant and lockers to stash your clothes in, and even a ‘blow dry bar’ so you can have your ‘hair did’ before you venture back to the office. T’was a lovely experience.
Our late lunch was also worth writing home about. See the foam art in our cappuccinos, my toasted bacon, brie and pepperdew and Shan’s chicken wrap – both with the best beetroot crisps we’ve tasted! Thanks to Shanny for the pics as my devices were otherwise occupied at the time.
Thursday, 16 November 2017: Another afternoon at Red & Yellow
The second lesson was presented by Rob Stokes’ wife, Nikki Cockcroft. You can just see her through the glass. She’s really amazing, having been CEO at Primedia Online, taken Woolworths digital and more.

Friday, 27 October 2017: Greek working lunch at Maria’s in Dunkley Square
I had a working-lunch meeting last Friday afternoon. We walked down to Maria’s in Dunkley Square – loved how the foam heart remained long after the coffee was gone. You can just see the slice of kataifi I ate, too.
Saturday, 28 October 2017: The Daily Cafe’s birthday special
Last weekend was the second birthday of The Daily Cafe in Big Bay’s Seaside Village. They treated customers to a birthday special – R70 for eggs benedict or florentine, along with a flute of orange juice or bubbly, and a cappuccino. It was a very good deal!

We presented Bertie with his newest chew-toy as he’s a good dog. What a happy boy.
Sunday, 29 October 2017: Bread and Butter breakfast, ice creams at Eden on the Bay
We decided on breakfast at Bread and Butter on Sunday. I had a cappuccino while Husband had his customary Cola to begin…
Husband asked for his salmon eggs benedict on a plate as things slide off of the usual breadboard. Also see my bacon-banana flapjack/crumpet stack.
We stopped in at Eden again on Sunday, for an afternoon ice cream treat. My windswept hair should be a giveaway that this was not an easy task. Wind in hair, hair in ice cream. Oof. Lovely, though.

Monday, 30 October 2017: Cruffins at Black Forest Cafe
Ahhh. Coffee. Book. Couch. Dogs. That’s how I spent the bulk of my Monday and Tuesday, relaxing and activating my brain’s ‘screensaver’ mode.

Mum and dad treated me to morning tea at the Black Forest Cafe, just up the street. The cappuccino was strong, the coffee shake chocolate-y, and the mood happy.
These are the cruffins (croissant + muffin) we chose from. Mmm.
Tuesday, 31 October 2017: Milky Lane waffles, W Cafe coffees, Halloween dins
If you’re ever at a loss for what to do on a Tuesday and have R36 standing by, take advantage of Milky Lane’s special – two plain waffles topped with ice cream blobs and all the syrups. For R36! We also shared a mint milkshake.
After a spot of window shopping we stopped at the W Cafe in Woolers for a coffee pick-me-up. I had a short vanilla-cinnamon while the parents had regular cappuccinos.
Mother-in-law loves a themed table, so invited us for dins on Tuesday evening. See various Halloween-y things.
The doggies were eager to get involved in all the food activities. See the marshmallow ‘spiders’ atop my jelly-mousse dessert.
Wednesday, 1 November 2017: Team lunch at La Bottega
After a morning of playing catch-up at my desk on all I’d missed from two days of leave, it was time for our department team lunch. We Ubered to La Bottega on Sir Lowry’s Road. That’s my Nutella-banana shake you see.
Milkshake up close, open views across Woodstock from the deck and my beef burger on sweet potato slice ‘bun’, with cheese and avo. Very yum!
We put Angie’s selfie stick to good use. This was about the best of the various attempts. Crying-with-laughter face.
Thursday, 2 November 2017: Office birthday cake and orchids
My lovely colleague Clarina brought in an assortment of cakes to celebrate her recent birthday. She does not look 40! And look at the fake orchid on my desk, with Angie’s real one just visible behind it. Office things.
